What to expect

Our 90-minute Geisha (Maiko) Experience Event takes place at Kounji Temple, a 13th century Zen temple and Japanese garden located conveniently by Nanzenji Temple. This temple is ordinarily closed to the public, so don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

What to expect:

  • Two traditional dances
  • Learn and play two traditional Japanese parlor games (zashiki) with the maiko!
  • Take pictures with the maiko in a traditional Japanese tatami room!
  • Entry to ordinarily closed Kounji temple and garden
  • Q&A with English-speaking guide/interpreter
  • Small group size (max 10 participants)

What is a Maiko?

Maiko are apprentice geisha, easily distinguished by their colorful clothing, makeup, and elaborate hairstyles!

  • Please wear or bring socks, as you’ll be asked to remove your shoes before entering the temple.
  • Please refrain from bringing large luggage and bags.
  • Please be respectful and refrain from touching or grabbing the maiko, her clothing, or her hair, including during photo time.
