Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence is a typical "French Neoclassical" architectural style, while also incorporating traditional Chinese elements, forming a unique "fusion of Chinese and Western" characteristic. Looking from Chifeng Road, the exterior of Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence is highly recognizable: red clear brick walls are paired with white stone decorations, the roof is a red pitched roof covered with French-style terracotta tiles, and the chimney is exquisitely shaped with smooth lines. The front of the building adopts a symmetrical layout, with a spacious central porch. Two Roman columns stand on either side of the porch, with delicate patterns carved on their shafts, appearing both solemn and agile.

It is worth mentioning that the red bricks on the exterior walls of the building are not ordinary bricks, but "machine-made red bricks" imported from Britain at that time. These bricks are hard in texture, uniform in color, and have maintained their vibrant red color after a hundred years of wind and rain, becoming an iconic element of the former residence's appearance.
