Traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony Experience in Kyoto

Just one block from the iconic Kinkaku-ji, this tea ceremony is a rare, authentic immersion into Japanese culture. Please understand this is not a photo op, but a living art form (although the hostess was very kind to take pictures). The hostess, with over 15 years of experience, guides you with deep knowledge through every ritualized movement, each steeped in centuries of tradition. Her passion and precision transform a simple cup of matcha into a learning experience for those unfamiliar. Though casual, it is also a chance to witness and begin to understand a practice that embodies harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. A must for anyone seeking genuine cultural connection in Kyoto. Highly recommend! Come with an open mind and an interest in learning the art of tea ceremonies.

Our experience was excellent! The host was very knowledgeable and welcoming. A very insightful and memorable experience that we will cherish. Not to mention, the Matcha tea was wonderful! Would definitely reccomend this experience if you’re in town.

The experience was nice. But I have to point out that the teacher was not very polite, never a smile, very hasty and brusque even during the ceremony. We couldn't understand her English well and she expected us to already know how to do all the gestures of the rite. Too bad, it ruined the atmosphere a bit. The rooms are characteristic but very narrow. High price for the service offered (kimono not very well made in our opinion...)

I really enjoyed the tea ceremony. The kimono and facilities were beautiful however the ceremony was rushed and unfortunately we paid extra for kimonos but didn’t have time for pictures as we had to change out of them for the next booking very quickly. This was a shame because we had paid extra.

I wish that I took the time to read some of the negative Google reviews as these represent the experience my family and I had. When we arrived we were rushed upstairs for the Kimono dressing where the host (Rie) felt the need to push me physically up the stairs. I asked her not to behave like that as it was also accompanied by rudeness when she spoke. Throughout the ceremony she continued to be stressed and didn't take kindly to any mistakes made by guests. Although I appreciate it is marketed as an authentic experience, Rie should understand that first timers from all over the world won't be perfect. Aside from the negatives, the ceremony was carried out with skill by Rie. When Rie suggested guests ask questions, she did not always give respectful responses and would respond as if they were stupid questions. Rie, this is not a personal attack on you however please take onboard the negative feedback and don't give defensive responses as per your Google reviews.

Unfortunately it was a bit disappointing, quite rushed and not very clean. Maybe they need to slow down with circulation. Best
