What to expect
- Yamadera Temple: Ascend a thousand stone steps to cleanse your worries and soul. Also known as Risshaku-ji Temple, it is a famous spiritual site in Yamagata. It has 1015 stone steps, and legend has it that climbing to the top will eliminate worries and bring inner peace. Along the way, there are historical sites and poets’ verse monuments, making each step of the climb full of cultural significance. Standing on the observation deck, you can overlook the entire Yamagata mountain range and experience a dual purification of the soul and senses.
- Ginzan Onsen: Step into a nostalgic hot spring town from an animated scene. Ginzan Onsen, famous as the location for a classic animation, is a rare hot spring town in Japan that retains its Showa-era atmosphere. Wooden inns, sweet shops, and cafes line the stone-paved streets, creating a retro atmosphere. Strolling along the Ginzan River, you can also relax your feet in the free foot bath area and experience the healing power of natural hot spring water. It is recommended to bring your own towel to make the foot bath experience more convenient.
- Tarumizu Ruins: A mysterious sacred site of asceticism hidden in the mountains. (If there is time left after visiting Yamadera Temple, we will visit the Tarumizu Ruins.) Located deeper in the mountains behind Yamadera Temple, it is an ancient sacred site full of spiritual energy. It is said to be the place where Jikaku Daishi Ennin, the founder of Yamadera Temple, practiced asceticism. Legend has it that Ennin Daishi was deeply attracted by the solemn scenery of this place and decided to establish a Tendai sect spiritual site here. He secluded himself in the “Ennin’s Lodging Site” cave deep in the rock face to conceive the blueprint for the foundation of Yamadera Temple. Inside the ruins, you can see the torii gate of the Komine Shrine and the Inari Shrine enshrined there. Near the cracks in the rock face, Fudo Myoo is also enshrined. The huge honeycomb-shaped rock walls, which have been eroded by water for many years, combined with the vermilion torii gate and the deep cave, create a breathtaking beauty, making it one of Yamagata Prefecture’s leading scenic energy spots, allowing people to feel the sacred atmosphere of nature and faith intertwined.

Thank you Tourwave for the thoughtful arrangements that allowed us to smoothly visit the magnificent mountain temples and the dreamy Ginzan Onsen. We also enjoyed authentic and delicious Yamagata soba noodles. The whole trip was comfortable and fulfilling, leaving us with wonderful memories! 😊

Thank you for finally being able to visit the Risshakuji Temple that I had been dreaming of. There was also a young man from Australia in the same group. We had a great time interacting with each other. Although our English was not very good, we were still able to communicate. Thank you Ms. Lai and Mr. Tian Yuan. We climbed up the Risshakuji Temple together, walked around Ginzan Onsen together, and shared our shopping experiences and joys. It was a really interesting trip. Although the downside was that my knees and calves were sore for the next few days, it was still a worthwhile trip.
This itinerary was excellent; I absolutely loved the scenery at Yamadera and highly recommend it. Yama-san's service and the driver were both wonderful and very kind. I'm very grateful for their company. Ginzan Onsen is a charming, historic, and atmospheric spot; it would be even better if one could stay there overnight.
The two-person tour is very flexible, and the Chinese tour leader, Ms. Lai, is very attentive and polite, highly recommended!
