We enjoyed our stay at the temple. We booked a superior room with the futon which I now know means sleeping on the floor. I would recommend getting a bed for those with aches and pains because it’s very uncomfortable on the floor - you will not get good sleep. The temple itself is very beautiful. The service is the morning was fun and I am glad we participated. We did the cemetery walk ourselves - a tour was not offered to us which it was apparently offered to other guests. The cemetery is stunning and we really enjoyed it at day and night. The food was meh…. Luckily there is a cafe across the street. Overall I recommend for one night

Koyasan was the highlight of our Japan experience. The place we got for overnight temple stay at Ekoin temple was beautiful. Dinner was large and amazing (I am not a vegetarian but the food was delicious). Our room was a junior suite with our own bath and garden. I would not have it any other way. I wish I stayed longer than one night. Remember that this is a stay at a temple. Although one gets very nice experience, I would urge any tourists to not treat this as some hotel. The people serving you are Buddhists monks or monks in training. As a Buddhist (from a different country), we would never have monks serving us food (other way around). I have seen people leave some not so kind comments and if that is something you are inclined to do, consider not doing temple stay and check yourself into an actual hotel.

Very clean room and facilities. Staff were super attentive. Great service. The experience I had was exceptional. Morning prayer and Fire ritual were memorable and worth taking in. The sleeping mats were a bit difficult for an older person like myself. Koyasan in general was a nice break from the usual fast pace of the larger cities.

Incredible. The vegetarian dishes were the best we ever had. Our room, the semi-suite was luxurious and welcoming. The staff was friendly and spoke very good English. We do not regret going to Koya and staying at the Ekoin. It was definitely a highlight in our trip. From the ceremonies to the food to the cemetery tour at night with an amazing guide.

An exceptional and unforgettable experience. We learned meditation techniques and took part in the goma ritual, which was truly incredible. The shukubo is very clean and well maintained. There’s no AC or private restroom since the original structure is preserved, but that adds to the authenticity of the traditional Japanese stay. Highly recommended!
