Not bad. Departure time is very punctual. You should arrive early to choose a seat. It's quite windy at night. It's cold to have a meeting on the bridge, so be careful. Overall, it's not bad.

The location is super convenient, just a short walk to Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the service staff are friendly and professional. The overall atmosphere is relaxed, and it's also suitable for families with children. I would definitely choose to stay here again next time I visit San Francisco.

Our driver and guide, Jonathan, was very dedicated. Even though it was a long journey, he was still energetic and even made a special stop at an apricot orchard on the way back so we could take pictures! The national park after the snow is like a wonderland and is well worth a visit, but I recommend staying overnight, you should be able to discover more.

Things to do on Alcatraz Island

Take the Alcatraz Cellhouse audio tour

Visit the former Alcatraz cellhouse and hear stories from past prisoners and guards. You'll learn about their daily lives, escape attempts, and important events that happened in the military prison from 1934 to 1963.

It's a cool way to learn about the former prison's history while walking through the actual prison. Plus, this award-winning audio tour is included in your ferry ticket!

Join the night tour

If you love spooky adventures, you should try exploring Alcatraz at night! In this special tour, you can enjoy activities closed during the day, such as entry to the hospital wing and in-depth guided tours by island historians.

Attend ranger talks and tours

Alcatraz Island has lots of engaging tours and talks you can attend, led by rangers and volunteers. You'll learn more about the former federal prison as the rangers take you on interpretive walks, cell door demonstrations, and historical talks. These are available daily, and you can check the schedule upon arrival on the island.

Walk through the Gardens of Alcatraz

See the flowers bloom at the historic Gardens of Alcatraz! The island used to be bare, but military staff and inmates helped turn it into a colorful garden. After the prison closed in 1963, the gardens were forgotten---until volunteers brought them back to life.
