Reviews

This is one of the three Cistercian sister abbeys in Southern France and a prime example of Romanesque architecture. It's also the abbey that Le Corbusier referenced. The light filtering through the cloister's carvings is truly beautiful, and the pulpit is simple yet profoundly resonant. The structures, made by polishing and connecting massive rocks, are grand and seemingly rough, yet delicate and intricate. It feels deep, as if it holds an unadorned inner beauty. The views from the rooftop, the garden, and the exterior offer a感動(emotional experience) that cannot be felt in the splendor and embellishments of typical cathedrals. While on-site ticket purchases are still common, I was very happy to be able to buy them online at Klook.

Step into the serene world of 12th-century monastic life with a visit to Le Thoronet Abbey, a stunning example of Cistercian architecture in Provence. Built with simplicity and precision, the abbey reflects the ultra-pious spirit of the Cistercian order, designed to eliminate distractions and focus the mind on spiritual devotion. Wander through the stone cloisters, church, and communal spaces, where echoes of a disciplined, austere lifestyle still linger. The harmonious proportions and natural acoustics reveal the monks’ deep connection to silence, structure, and purpose.
