What to expect
- Zao Fox Village: Spend a Relaxing Time with Healing Foxes Zao Fox Village is Japan’s only natural park with free-range foxes as its main theme. More than 100 foxes live in the park, and you can observe them up close as they freely move around and interact in the forest, and even follow visitors. Although you cannot touch them, you can still feel the natural charm of the foxes and capture many precious moments. If traveling with children, please note that each adult can only bring one child who has not yet entered school.
- Okama Crater Lake: Magnificent Volcanic Lake View, Experience the Power and Beauty of Nature The crater lake “Okama” in Zao Mountain has a dreamy emerald green color due to the mineral spring quality. The lake water changes color depending on the weather and sunlight, and is a representative natural wonder of Tohoku. On a clear day, standing at a high place and overlooking the magnificent scenery of the volcano and lake intertwined is like being in a paradise. If you cannot go due to weather conditions, you will instead visit the historical city of “Shiroishi Castle.”
- Shiroishi Castle: Experience 260 Years of Historical Glory (If you cannot visit Okama due to bad weather, you will visit Shiroishi Castle instead.) Shiroishi Castle (Masuoka Castle) was once the residence of the Katakura clan, an important vassal of the Date family, and witnessed the historical changes from the Battle of Sekigahara to the Meiji Restoration. In the 1995 reconstruction, the crossbeams of the Otemon gate were specially selected from Taiwanese alpine wood, which not only represents the high quality of Taiwanese wood, but also shows the long-standing good reputation of Taiwanese wood in Japan.
- Yajiro Kokeshi Village: Tohoku Specialty Crafts Yajiro Kokeshi Village is one of the most representative spots to learn about the traditional Tohoku craft “kokeshi (wooden dolls).” The park displays various kokeshi, from traditional to modern creations, and there are also craftsmen stationed in the village, so you can see the craftsmen creating in the workshop up close. It is a great place to experience the local culture and craftsmanship of Tohoku.

There were 9 of us in total, 3 of us were from Hong Kong, and the other 6 were foreigners. The organizer arranged 2 tour guides, one who spoke Mandarin with the 3 of us, and the other who spoke English with the 6 foreigners. They also arranged a 22-seat tour bus, which was very comfortable. Our tour guide, Mr. Yama, took good care of us. He not only helped us take photos, but also introduced some snacks for us to try along the way, and acted as our translator to communicate with the store owners. We had a lot of fun. Although the tour fee was more expensive and did not include the entrance fee, because it was a small group, the tour bus was very comfortable, the driver was very polite and the service was very good, the slightly expensive tour fee was worth it.

I joined this trip with Mr. Azumi and Mr. Watanabe. Unfortunately, the weather was bad, so we couldn’t see the crater, but seeing so many adorable foxes up close totally made up for it! Halfway through the trip, I suddenly felt unwell, but thanks to both of them that were incredibly kind and adjust the schedule according to my condition. Their thoughtfulness and professionalism made me feel so safe and cared for. Even with a few challenges, it turned out to be such a warm and memorable day.
The private car tour for our small group of eight was very comfortable. Azumi-san and the driver provided excellent service. It's a shame the weather at Okama wasn't good, so we didn't get to see the beautiful scenery. However, Fox Village and Yajiro are definitely worth a visit!

Tour rating a 4 only because the weather did not cooperate. terrible visibility at Zao Crater. Unable to see anything due to cloudy conditions and rain. Must try again at a later time. Van was clean and comfortable for 6 passengers. English guide was good and communicated well. Fox village was also wet and cold. In May the foxes start losing its winter coat.
It was a great experience. Our tour guide, Yama, was very nice and took care of everyone in the group. He also helped us take pictures and introduced us to many local delicacies!

- This is a shared day tour in Japan, and you will be joining other international travelers. Please adhere to the meeting time and group pace.

🦊 Zao Fox Village Visiting Guidelines
- The Fox Village is located within a forest. While walking, foxes may approach, follow, or tug at clothing. Please pay special attention to your personal safety and belongings.
- All foxes in the village are free-roaming animals. There is a risk of being bitten, so please do not actively touch or feed them.
- Each adult is limited to bringing one child of pre-school age into the village. Please comply with the park's regulations.
🧳 Luggage and Participation Requirements
- Participation is not recommended for infants under 2 years old or individuals with limited mobility. This tour does not provide infant car seats or barrier-free facilities.
- If you need to bring large luggage or have train connection needs, please indicate this when booking, and we will assist with arrangements as possible.
