Rent a car in Yokohama
Convenience and Exploration
Renting a car in Yokohama offers unparalleled freedom to explore the city's attractions at your leisure. With your own set of wheels, you can easily drive to the historic Sankeien Garden, less than 30 minutes away, or the bustling Yokohama Chinatown in just 10 minutes. Enjoy the flexibility to visit the picturesque Yamashita Park or the innovative CupNoodles Museum without the constraints of public transport schedules.
Vehicle Inspection and Rental Agreement
Upon receiving your rental car, conduct a thorough inspection for any pre-existing damage. Document any imperfections with photographs or video to prevent any future disputes. Familiarize yourself with the rental contract, noting details such as mileage allowances, fuel policies, insurance inclusions, extra charges, and driving area limitations. Remember to refuel the car before returning it to sidestep extra refueling costs. If you're running late for the car return, contact the rental agency to discuss extending your rental period.
Child Safety Requirements
In Japan, child passengers must adhere to strict safety regulations. Children under six years old must use rear-facing car seats, while older children may need booster seats. Confirm with the rental company if they provide the necessary car seats and whether they will be pre-installed. Traveling without the appropriate child restraints is illegal and could result in penalties.
Navigating Yokohama Traffic
Yokohama, like any major city, can experience traffic congestion, particularly during rush hours from 7 to 9 am and 5 to 7 pm. Plan your routes to avoid these peak times. When driving near central areas like the Minato Mirai district, stay alert as the road layouts can be complex.
Cost-Effective Mobility
While Yokohama's public transport is efficient, renting a car can be a more economical choice for extensive exploration. Taxis can be pricey, but with a rental car, you have the advantage of a GPS navigation system to guide you. This allows you to venture to destinations such as the serene Kamakura or the engaging Hakkeijima Sea Paradise at your own pace and convenience.
Airport Rental Services
At Yokohama's nearest airport, Haneda Airport, you'll find a variety of car rental services available. Both domestic terminals feature rental counters, and an additional rental car center is located in the international arrivals area. Choose from reputable providers such as Nissan Rent-a-Car, Toyota Rent a Car, or Nippon Rent-a-Car for your transportation needs.
Driving in Japan
When driving in Yokohama, remember that traffic moves on the left side. Road signs are bilingual on main roads, but having a vehicle with an English GPS system is beneficial for navigating less-traveled paths. Be mindful of cyclists, especially in urban areas, and always stop at red lights and railway crossings. Japan has a zero-tolerance policy for driving under the influence, so ensure you have a sober driver if alcohol is involved.

Fantastic Sienta Toyota 4 day
The service was excellent. All the staff are Chinese and can speak Mandarin. There's also an app for easy communication with them. While you can't pick up the car directly at the store near Yokohama Station, the pickup location is very convenient, right outside the JR West Exit of Yokohama Station.
