Apart from its natural beauty, Okinawa also has a unique culture shaped by its history and geography. The Ryukyu Kingdom, which ruled over the islands for centuries, developed its own distinct culture, which can be seen in the architecture, music, dance, and cuisine of the nearby islands.

    1. Taketomi Island

Taketomi Island is a small, picturesque island located just a short 10 to 15 minutes high-speed boat ride away from Ishigaki Island.
Due to its proximity to Ishigaki and the numerous daily flights available, it's an ideal day trip destination for those who want to experience the beauty of the remote islands without committing to an overnight stay in Japan.
Despite its small size, Taketomi Island is a beloved and popular destination among both first-time visitors and repeat travelers to the Yaeyama Islands.
It's no surprise why - the island's charming village is lined with traditional red-tile roofed buildings, and its roads are made of pure white sand, creating a truly unique atmosphere that feels like stepping back in ancient Japan.
One of the biggest draws of Taketomi Island is the fact that it still retains the traditional look and feel of old Okinawa, which is increasingly difficult to find on mainland Japan.
This makes it an ideal destination for those looking to experience a different side of Japan and immerse themselves in the rich history and culture of Yaeyama.

To explore the island, renting a bicycle is highly recommended. With a circumference of only about 9 kilometers, it's easy to ride leisurely around the entire island in a single day.
Along the way, you can take in the stunning scenery, which includes lush greenery, crystal-clear waters, a white sandy beach, and the famous bougainvillea flowers that bloom in vibrant shades of pink and purple.

Finally, no trip to Taketomi Island would be complete without experiencing a ride on a water buffalo cart. These iconic carts, which are still used by locals for transportation and farming purposes, are a charming and unforgettable way to explore the island's rustic beauty.

Kohama Island is a remote island located almost in the center of Yaeyama. It takes 25 to 30 minutes by high-speed boat from Ishigaki Island, and it is popular as an island that can be visited on a day trip along with Taketomi Island because there are many ferries.
It is also famous for being the stage of the NHK TV series "Chura-san".
In addition to the beaches, Kohama Island has a unique and rich culture. You can visit the "Kohama Island Museum" to learn about the island's history and traditions, including its famous "Kohama Ishigaki". It is a traditional craft of making stone walls that are used to protect the island from typhoons and strong winds.

Kohama Island is also a great place to try local cuisine. The island is famous for its "Kohama Soba", which is a type of soba wheat noodles made with locally grown wheat flour. It has a unique texture and flavor that you can't find anywhere else.
During the summer months, Kohama Island holds the "Kohama Island Music Festival", where you can enjoy live music performances by local and national artists. The festival is held outdoors and has a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere, making it a great way to experience the island's culture.
The island is wide, so we recommend renting a motorbike or rental car. By the way, I was able to meet a wild peacock while driving around the island!
There is also the luxury resort hotel Haimurubushi and Hoshino Resorts RISONARE Kohamajima, so it is also recommended for those who want to spend a relaxing time centered on hotel stays.
Whether you're looking for a relaxing beach holiday or a cultural experience, Kohama Island has something for everyone.

If you're feeling more adventurous, trek through the jungle to discover the island's stunning waterfalls, including the famous Pinaisara Falls. It is recommended for those who want to enjoy the subtropical nature of Okinawa rather than the sea.
While it's possible to visit Iriomote Island on a day trip from Ishigaki Island, it's highly recommended to stay overnight and fully immerse yourself in the island's natural wonders since there are so many activities you can do on Iriomote Island. It might be a bit of a waste to go on a day trip.
