Get up close to one of the most extraordinary waterfalls in the world, powered by the mighty Yellow River. Hukou Waterfall is said to be the world’s only yellow waterfall and the second largest in China after Huangguoshu Waterfall in Anshun. Hukou forms naturally when the Yellow River flows through Jinxia Grand Canyon on its middle reaches. The width of the waterfall changes with the season, usually 30 meters (98 feet) wide but increasing to 50 meters (164 feet) during flood season. Stand near the edge of the gorge and feel the rumble of raging water from just several feet away! If the water level is subdued, you can walk down a passage to get a spectacular panoramic view of not just the waterfall but the splendid Loess Plateau. There are restaurants in the area that offer local Chinese delicacies such as Yellow River carps and Yan’an wines. It’s best to visit from April to May and September to November. If you’re visiting during the winter, you’ll get to see how Hukou Waterfall transforms into an ice wonderland with silver icicles hanging from the cliffs.
