Monkey Temple – SwayambhuNath Walking Tour
Swayambhunath Stupa, situated at hilltop, is a holy shrine of great antiquity and mystery in the Kathmandu Valley. Its majestic white dome and shimmering golden spire are clearly visible from every corner of the valley.
What to expect
Our journey begins in Thamel and takes us to the famous Indrayeni Temple, located by the banks of the Bishnumati River.
From there, we’ll continue on to the Shova Bhagawati Temple, another remarkable site on our path.
The Shova Bhagwati Temple is another significant shrine on the way to Swayambhunath. Here, you will encounter the Ashta Matrikas (Eight Mothers) and the Nava Durgas (Nine Durgas), who are among the most revered goddesses in Nepali culture.
Swayambhunath Stupa is our main attraction.

One of the highlights of my time in Kathmandu, with incredible views over the valley. I highly recommend visiting with a guide, as there is a lot of detail and many shrines you might otherwise miss. Sandip was very patient and took the time to explain both Buddhist and Hindu concepts to me, which really added depth to the experience, as well as wider context about everyday life and culture in Nepal.
