Reviews
It says the meeting place is the station, but there is no specific information on what to do at the station. I went to the ticket center and showed the QR code I used when booking, but in the end they didn't read the code and just wrote down the reservation number and issued the ticket manually, then I went to my assigned seat. The seats are two seats facing each other, but since it was empty that day, I was able to have a four-seat seat all to myself. Facing the direction of travel, the view on the left and right sides of the aisle is different. Of course, there are two chances, on the way there and back, but I recommend going on a day when it's not crowded. The windows are small and you can't get your body out, so you have to take photos through dirty windows, which is difficult due to light reflections. There are breaks at HINDON station and Pukerangi station, where you get off the train and take a rest, so you can take your time taking photos there. I recommend enjoying the magnificent scenery with your bare eyes instead of a camera on the train. I'm not very good at English, so I could only hear 20-30% of the male guide's announcements on the train, but I still felt that he was a little untimely. The sights are the same, so I think it would be nice if they prepared the pamphlets and guides they have for foreigners. There were a lot of Chinese people, and it seemed to have a deep historical connection, so I would like them to provide English and Chinese, but if possible, Japanese as well. The weather was good and the scenery was amazing. Coffee and snacks were also sold on the train, and it was worth leaving the city for five hours and taking a leisurely train ride. There is a small sports museum in the station, which costs $6 to enter and is well worth seeing.
The Gorge train journey was beautiful, stunning scenery with a real sense of nature and history throughout the trip.
Fantastic tour we enjoyed every moment. The views are spectacular through the mountainside, the markets run by the locals was a welcome treat for buying gifts and the coffee and snacks on the train was a pleasant and enjoyable surprise.
A wonderful experience looking at the scenic view onboard a train with so much heritage and history.

Generally, it's not very interesting, and the scenery is very average.
Good to know
- Arrive early: Check-in opens at 8:30am and closes at 9:15am for the 9:30am departure.
- Bring a layer: Conditions can change as the train travels inland, and the viewing platforms can be cooler than inside the carriage.
- Explore the viewing platforms: Step out during the journey for a different perspective of the gorge, river and historic railway.
- Don’t miss Deep Stream: If the stop operates on your journey, step off for the bridge walk and the chance to watch the train cross the gorge towards you.
- Explore the Station: Allow some extra time before or after your journey to look around Dunedin Railway Station itself.
