What to expect
- Starting from Fukuoka, embark on a Kyushu journey intertwining nature and culture along the foothills of Mount Aso. The first stop is a ride on the Minami Aso Railway, traveling from Tateno Station to Minami Aso Shirakawa Suigen Station. The approximately 40-minute journey passes through mountains, fields, and streams, with the constantly changing scenery of the Aso Five Peaks and the countryside outside the window, making the railway itself a scenic part of the trip. Depending on the day's operational arrangements, there's also a chance to experience the One Piece themed train or a limited-time sightseeing train, adding special memories to this Aso trip.
- Next, visit Mount Aso ((Due to a helicopter accident, the Aso crater is closed. The time at Kusasenri will be extended based on the actual situation on the day)) and Kusasenri, experiencing Kyushu’s representative volcanic landscape on the vast grasslands. Admire the magnificent view of Mount Aso from afar, stroll through Kusasenri, and enjoy the free-grazing cattle and horses and the ever-changing grassland scenery throughout the seasons. Visitors who enjoy activities can also participate in horseback riding at their own expense, enjoying a leisurely time amidst the grasslands and volcanic landscape. If the crater is open, you can experience the power of nature displayed by the active volcano up close; if there are restrictions, the itinerary will be adjusted according to the on-site situation.
- Finally, head to Kumamoto Castle, with over 400 years of history, to admire its majestic main keep, unique stone walls, and castle town scenery. After the visit, you can also go to Sakurano-baba Johsaien to taste local Kumamoto delicacies and buy souvenirs, experiencing the charm of Kumamoto City in an atmosphere where history and modernity intertwine.

Helen and Taku were fantastic! They were super friendly and they always communicated what views were coming up. They also told us the history if the mountains, volcano, and monuments in the area. The views on the tour were spectacular, and we all had a great time. I would definitely book another tour with this group if they offered tours in other areas
We were very lucky to have good weather. Our tour leader, Ms. Liu Zhihong (Cico), contacted us via email the day before because we were joining the tour at the second stop, Kumamoto Castle, and confirmed she would help us get seats closer to the front. Today, both guides used all four languages (English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) and explained everything very diligently. In addition, even though we had purchased our own Aso Boy train tickets for the return trip from Aso to Kumamoto, Guide Liu was very thoughtful. During a break in our free time, she first took us to confirm our train schedule before leading the rest of the group back. It was truly a wonderful trip, and we will definitely join again next time.
Our tour guide, Ms. Li, was very responsible. She contacted us the day before via international call to confirm the pick-up time and location. Although the weather wasn't great, luckily it didn't rain, and we were able to see another side of Mount Aso. Kusa-Senri looked like a lake due to the accumulated rainwater from the previous days. We were also fortunate enough to get panorama seats on the Aso Boy train, and the picturesque scenery along the way was the perfect ending to our trip.
Unfortunately, the Aso Boy train wasn't running when I went, and another train was fully booked, so I had to take a regular train. Since I was boarding from Kumamoto, I was able to spend more time at Kumamoto Castle. For Kusa-Senri and Mount Aso, I recommend joining a tour group; the mountain signal is really poor, and it would be a hassle if Google Maps failed. Each attraction is scheduled for just over an hour (Kumamoto Castle gets a bit more time), which is quite tight but still sufficient and pretty good!
The weather was perfect on the day of departure, the trip went smoothly, and the scenery was beautiful. It's perfect for travelers who want to relax, stroll around, shop, and eat. The time spent at each stop was reasonable. The tour guide, Emily, was also very friendly and lovely. I'm so glad I got to participate in this trip! :)
