In order to save time on traveling, we signed up for this tour. It seemed that there were fixed seats on the bus, but the tour guide did not tell us. We only found out that we were sitting in someone else's seat when we got our lunch in the evening. The zoo stay in the morning is only 1.5 hours. If you want to spend more time visiting, it is recommended to eat lunch in the car first, or eat on the way to the icebreaker after visiting the zoo! Our group didn't arrive until 11:20 and got off at the East Gate. It was a pity that we didn't have time to see the penguins walking! In addition, the ground in the zoo is very slippery during the snow season, so it is recommended to wear crampons for easier walking. We took the last icebreaker in the afternoon. We were lucky enough to sail smoothly and see the drifting ice. The crab meat dinner box we paid for ourselves was delicious and had a great value for money! The journey will take up more than half of the time from 9am to 10pm, so it will be a bit tiring, so be prepared.
Arrived at Asahikawa Zoo East Gate at 11:05, immediately rushed to the penguin walk next to the West Gate, just in time to see the penguin walk!!! The weather was very good for the icebreaker ship today, and we caught up with the drift ice too, fantastic! You can check the weather forecast on the official website in advance, which will also tell you whether the ship will sail or not. If it doesn't sail, you can cancel the trip in advance (usually two days in advance) to avoid unnecessary waste. This trip is highly recommended for those with children, although it's a bit tiring, it's really great.
The icebreaker schedule is hard to predict, so I went to Mombetsu with the mentality that it was cancelled. I unexpectedly took the last ferry. I was very lucky and thankful to the driver and the tour guide. The only thing that was not very good was that the tour guide's English level was relatively basic, and there were some difficulties in communication, but she used the translator very seriously. Overall, it is recommended.
For individual travelers, being able to make a same-day round trip is a very strong incentive. From 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, the scenery along the way is also magnificent and highly recommended.
Although the tour guide does not speak Chinese, he provides Chinese itinerary broadcasts. The icebreaker itinerary is great! The endless drift ice is super beautiful🥹🙂‍↔️
The staff on the bus were very attentive when explaining things in Japanese, but only gave a summary in English. However, when it came to bus boarding rules, they played explanations in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. Why can't the introductions be played in the same way? Hearing a lot of Japanese and then only one sentence in English is really frustrating. They kept reminding us about the driving time, but didn't care about anything else. 😐 As for the itinerary, the traffic was smooth and we arrived at Asahikawa Zoo at around 11:00 AM, so we were able to participate in the penguin walk. Lunch is not included, so it's recommended to buy something in advance and eat it on the bus. Two hours are reserved for visiting the zoo. Today, the Monbetsu icebreaker ship only saw open water, no drift ice (this part is nature and cannot be controlled). If you didn't order a bento on the bus, there is a convenience store where you can buy food before boarding the icebreaker.
The itinerary was a bit tight, and unfortunately the weather wasn't great so we didn't see very beautiful drift ice, but it felt like the captain did his best to find a sparse patch of ice and run into it.
The itinerary is very thoughtful, the driver and guide are warm and polite, especially for Chinese tourists, they are also very careful and patient. Although the journey is long, it is still worth the trip!
