Takayama Station

Tokyo Station

The central Shinkansen terminus in Tokyo, with direct connections to the Yamanote Line, Chuo Line, Keiyo Line, and multiple subway lines. Tokyo Station is the most convenient arrival point for travelers heading to central Tokyo, Ginza, or onward connections to other Shinkansen lines, and a major city hub for arrivals. Many travelers visiting Japan use Tokyo Station for easy onward access across the rail network.

Shinagawa Station

From Nagoya, the Tokaido Shinkansen carries you to Tokyo in approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Nozomi is slightly faster at around 1 hour 25 minutes but is not covered by the JR Pass. Japan rail offers three seat classes: Ordinary, Green Car, and Gran Class. The green car is the first class option, with wider reclining seats and a quieter cabin. Gran Class is the top-tier option, with luxury seating, gourmet meals, and dedicated attendants on applicable services. Reservations are required before boarding for Green Car and Gran Class. The Shinkansen arrives at Tokyo Station, directly connected to the city’s subway network.

Board the Limited Express Hida at Takayama Station bound for Nagoya. Travel time is approximately 2 hours 25 minutes to 2 hours 35 minutes. Reserved seating is recommended — the Hida fills up during peak travel periods.

Arrive at Nagoya Station and transfer to the Tokaido Shinkansen toward Tokyo. The Shinkansen platforms are within the same station complex. Allow at least 15 minutes for the transfer.

Board Hikari Shinkansen at Nagoya for Tokyo Station. Travel time is approximately 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. JR Pass holders should board Hikari — Nozomi is not covered by the pass. Arrive at Tokyo Station in central Tokyo.

Overnight highway buses between Takayama and Shinjuku are a popular and practical option, particularly among budget travelers planning a longer trip. Daytime buses take approximately 5 hours 30 minutes. Overnight buses depart in the evening and arrive in Tokyo early morning, effectively saving one night’s accommodation cost. The train is the better option for comfort, reliability, and daytime travel. The overnight bus is a genuine money-saver for budget travelers with flexible plans — but book well in advance, especially during Golden Week and summer holidays when buses sell out weeks ahead.

The JR Pass covers both the Limited Express Hida and the Tokaido Shinkansen Hikari or Kodama. JR Pass holders should note that Nozomi from Nagoya to Tokyo is not covered — Hikari takes only about 15 to 20 minutes longer and is fully included. Seat reservations on both the Hida and Shinkansen are included with the JR Pass at no additional cost.

This pass covers the Hida limited express but does not extend to the Tokaido Shinkansen leg toward Tokyo. It is not a suitable option for this route unless your itinerary is primarily Hokuriku-focused. It makes more sense if you travel from the opposite side via Toyama Station: the JR Hida Limited Express to Toyama takes about 90 minutes, the Hokuriku Shinkansen onward to Tokyo takes about 2.5 hours, and total travel time via Toyama is about 4.5 to 5 hours.
