I feel incredibly fortunate to have discovered the Mustard Hotel. I stayed there for three nights, then returned for another four nights later in my trip—and I honestly wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else in Tokyo.
Yes, the rooms are a little compact, but they’re spotless, the location is perfect, and the service is outstanding. A special shoutout to Lauren, who recommended Bar RPM, where I experienced some of the best live music and jam sessions of my trip. The complimentary continental breakfast is a fantastic bonus, and the coffee is as good as you’ll get anywhere.
If you’re planning a visit to Tokyo, do yourself a favour and stay at the Mustard Hotel while exploring the incredible neighbourhood of Shimokitazawa. And whatever you do, don’t miss a night at Bar RPM—you won’t regret it! 🇯🇵🎸☕🎶

Such a great place to stay in Tokyo. A quick walk to the subway, plenty to do and see in this chill and lovely neighbourhood.
The hotel is lovely with comfortable beds and good amenities, including a great coffee/bagel bar for breakfast.
Great lobby music, a charming bar, and vinyl to enjoy in your room. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. So glad I made this choice.

Mustard Hotel Shimokitazawa was a fantastic home base for our first few nights in Tokyo. The staff are extremely friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, and the location is great for those looking to be away from the crowds — Shimokitazawa is a great neighborhood that can at time be busy during the day but gets quiet in the evenings and overnight. The only thing to be aware of is that the rooms are on the small side, but in terms of value they are spot on. The complimentary breakfast at the cafe was fantastic and is a fantastic value.

FantasticStayed with partner
Mustard Hotel is a fantastic stay with helpful staff, a great attached cafe and bar and a cool vibe. It's super walkable to Shimokitazawa or to other Tokyo transport links but acts as a nice quiet base! Even with Shimokita Senro Sai happening - a festival for the sunken railway Mustard is built on top of - the room was quiet and cozy. Beds are definitely firm, and the double is probably only just big enough for a couple! But I have stayed here before and likely will stay here again.

GreatStayed with family
If you want to explore shimokitazawa, the location is great. Lots of cute cafes and dining options. Metro stations are nearby.
The rooms are small which is to be expected but I found the bathrooms to be extra tiny. And it doesn’t vent very well. The carpets are a little tired looking and the walls a bit banged up.
It’s cute that there’s a record player, but honestly it takes up precious table space.
The lobby can get very busy when the weather is nice as it’s also a cafe, which might not be what you are looking for after a long day of sightseeing.

FantasticStayed with friends
The friendliest staff checked us in and helped us amend a taxi booking for the next morning. The lobby is beautifully fitted out and we grabbed coffee, snacks and Mt Fuji water straight up as we’d travelled for two hours. The twin superior room was spacious and the shower the best we had in our whole Japan trip. Perfect location to explore the vintage shopping and enjoy the nearby eateries. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Next time I’d stay longer.
