Last minute trip to Takayama and was lucky to find this ryokan near the JR train and bus station for a two night stay. We enjoyed the ryokan, public Onsen on 1F and daily breakfast (definitely worth the additional fee). The town was fun to walk around with great restaurants and shopping. We took a bus ride to Shirakawago. Fun day.

Good

We stayed here for three nights and it was fine. We went back and forth between a four and three star rating. We really appreciated them upgrading us to a room with a bathroom (on mistake we booked a room without a bathroom) but overall we weren't overly enthused with the stay. They charged us C$33 per day for a five month old baby and all that was provided was a little bag of toys and an oversized kimono she could wear during the stay. We didn't have the breakfast as it was quite expensive (if I remember correctly something like C$30 each per day). The actual room was a bit worn and outdated but it was clean and we did like how they gave us little cookies every day. There was a nice lobby area with seating and free sake at night. The employees were polite and welcoming so no qualms there. The location was excellent for us - right next to the bus / train station and a 10 minute walk to the old town. I will also say that the laundrymat was free and convenient.

Delightful small Ryokan. Very polite and solicitous staff, we were learning the Ryokan experience as we went. They encouraged use of traditional yukata and offered women the opportunity to accent theirs with a small bow. The room as clean and they brought the bags up, while we changed into slippers. Very comfortable futon and the tattoo friendly Onsen was absolutely delightful.

Here’s a balanced 4-star review that sounds fair and helpful: We had a pleasant stay overall and really appreciated the traditional ryokan experience. The staff were kind, the property was clean, and the breakfast was beautifully presented. That said, there were a few things that made it a 4-star stay rather than a 5-star one. I should have researched the location and amenities more carefully, but I was surprised that the surroundings weren’t particularly scenic. There is no garden to enjoy, no view from the room, and no view from the breakfast restaurant, which made the experience feel less special than I expected. The onsen was also much hotter than I’m used to, making it difficult to stay in for more than a few minutes. Finally, the futon mattresses were quite firm and not especially comfortable for sleeping. Overall, it’s a good place if you’re looking for a traditional ryokan experience, but I would recommend checking the location and facilities carefully to make sure they match your expectations.

5 stars +++. This is one of the most wonderful properties I have ever stayed in. The people, all of the staff overly friendly, so courteous, so helpful, I hope to return one day and stay at this property. The food at breakfast is delicious, the servers were impeccable, reception and check-in was great, the location is super convenient. It is a safe property, quiet, clean, what more can I say?
