The best time to visit Semarang is from May to September, during the drier season in Central Java. These months are better for walking around Kota Lama, visiting Lawang Sewu, and planning day trips, while November to March can bring heavier rain.

Fly into Jenderal Ahmad Yani International Airport, take an intercity train to Semarang Tawang or Semarang Poncol, or travel by bus from Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and other Java cities. Cruise passengers may also arrive through Tanjung Emas Port.

Ride-hailing cars and taxis are the easiest way to move between Lawang Sewu, Kota Lama, Sam Poo Kong, and the Great Mosque of Central Java. Kota Lama is best explored on foot, while day trips outside the city usually require a private car or arranged tour.
