What to expect
Mauna Kea, standing approximately 4,205m above sea level, is the highest point in the state of Hawaii. The very size of this dormant volcano gives the island the reputation of being the second highest in the world! The summit of Mauna Kea is also home to the world's largest astronomical observatory, where visitors are treated to the most spectacular views of the horizon at any time of the day. With over 300 clear skies all year round, you can watch the sun set over a sea of clouds and, as the day turns into night, see the starts come out one by one, until the entire sky is filled with millions of them. Make use of the different telescopes as your guide explains the different constellations that you might find during the course of your tour.

Reviews
Reviews summaryThe tour guides, Jess and Robert , they are excellent.
tour guide jessica and Robert were full of energy. made sure that everyone was doing fine and was always smiling. we were lucky to have clear skies, but just note that its very cold at the summit of mauna kea.. vehicle was abit squeezy as it was a full load of passengers. thanks for the great experience
Starting from Hilo, people from Kona get off the bus, take a car to Hilo, and rest at the Mauna Kea Visitor Center for about 30 minutes. Then, while climbing up to Mt. Jeongsan, a local guide gets off midway to explain the shape of the stones, and gets off at the top to watch a sunset video. On the way down, you can take pictures of the stars and the sunset as the sun sets. The guide is great and provides clothes to keep you warm, but since the temperature drops below freezing, long sleeves and long underwear are required. A hot pack is also recommended. Cocoa and snacks are also recommended. We provide it to your heart's content
The sunset and starry sky were even better than I imagined, and it was an experience I will never forget. To prevent altitude sickness, we stay at the visitor center for about 30 minutes, so we can stop by the restroom and goods shop. Also, after arriving at the visitor center, each person is given a paper bag with sweets, so we eat them in the car and head to the peak. On the way back, we will not stop at the visitor center, so we recommend that you go to the restroom when possible.
Mauna Kea is truly magical! Be sure to experience it at least once in your life. A professional guide will provide friendly explanations. Our guide was “VAL” and she really did her best:))
Lovely tour with Mich! The tour is filled with fun and sincerity. Encourage anyone to sign up! :)
Weather was not the best for stargazing but had a great time nonetheless with a fantastic tourguide. Would highly recommend signing up for the tour as driving conditions can be quite challenging at night!
The first time I went there, I thought it was so spectacular. It was so beautiful and an unforgettable memory. Although it is a bit expensive, it is worth it. Although it is not the highest.
Unique and amazing experience. so many factors make this an interesting and perfect spot for an observatory. Stunning sunset and knowledgeable guides for the stargazing.
Our guides, Robert and Jess, were fantastic! Along the way, they introduced and recommended local restaurants and described the environment. When we arrived at the mountain, they provided us with warm jackets and gloves, as well as snacks, hot chocolate, and hot tea! During stargazing, they even helped us take photos and used a telescope to look at the stars. I highly recommend everyone to join this tour!!
