What to expect
Senbutsu Limestone Cave is one of the most famous attractions in Hiraodai, Kitakyushu. Hiraodai is a vast karst plateau formed about 300 million years ago. Over a long period of time, rainwater and groundwater gradually eroded and shaped this magnificent limestone cave, which officially opened to the public in 1937. The entire cave is estimated to be several thousand meters long, but currently only about 1,200 meters are open to general visitors, with about 900 meters of that area equipped with lighting.
This tour will be led by a guide to explore the illuminated section of the cave, which is about 900 meters long. Along the way, some sections become increasingly low and narrow, requiring you to bend, crouch, crawl, or even turn sideways to pass through. In addition, about half of the journey requires wading through water. The underground water temperature is around 16°C (61°F), which is quite chilly. The entire journey presents a certain level of challenge, but this adventure is definitely worth it.
As you venture deeper into the cave, you will admire the spectacular rock formations and breathtaking underground scenery crafted by nature's master craftsmanship. This is more than just an ordinary sightseeing tour; it is a true underground adventure that allows you to experience the unique and magnificent natural beauty of Hiraodai in an unforgettable way.
