In my booking it says free breakfast. When I was checking out, the lady receptionist is charging me for the breakfast. I told her and showed her my booking. She said it was a mistake and to call hotels.com. I told her I am going to report her and will make a review. I gave her my credit card but since I told her I will report her she shoves away my card and so I left. She is scamming me.

Room is acceptable , should has closet or rack for guest hanging clothes ,WC is small & shower should has door or curtain to avoid wet on the toilet and facility , staff is un friendly

The room is great but the neighbourhood is quite noisy. There was nobody at the reception, we had to knock the door of the staff who lives there.

Good location. Eateries just steps from the hotel entrance. Room was spacious with fresh air as window is openable . Beds & pillows are comfy.. Aircon & Water heater works well. Staff is friendly & helpful. The only obvious downside for this old property is the need to climb a spiral bridge to reach our room on the 5th level. Recommended when visiting Hanoi again.

Reception not manned! Had to wait nearly 10 minutes for service. Bed sheets had not been changed; had body fluid stains, pillow had blood stain. Shower was broken. Mould on walls in room, bathroom and hallway. The very loud speaker from government announcements right on our balcony. Very noisy! Staff did not learn the word "sorry", just a blank look when we complained.

Great value, clean spacious room, helpful staff. Well located near St. Joseph’s Cathedral, which means loud bells early in the morning! Not an issue for us, but it wouldn’t suit someone with difficulty climbing stairs, as there was no lift.

Especen hotel is one of the first mini hotels built since the 1990s, located in the center of the Old Quarter in Hanoi (some call this area the Cathedral quarter). It is just a stone’s throw from St. Joseph's Church (Cathedral) on a quiet lane. This convenient location allows you to be just a 5 minute walk from Hoan Kiem Lake, Vietnam Airlines booking office & No. 1 Quang Trung bus stop (for service to Noi Bai International airport). You can get to all the famous travel points, restaurants, craft shops, pubs and art galleries,... as soon as you step onto the main road. The Petit Futé guidebook describes Especen hotel as: A small hotel nestled in the maze of streets that surround the Cathedral. Wake to the sound of church bells and a panoramic view of Hanoi rooftops ocher (Petit hôtel niché dans le lacis des ruelles qui enserrent la cathédrale. Réveil au son des cloches et vue panoramique sur les toits ocre de Hanoi). In an adventure book "The House on Dream Street: Memoir of an American Woman in Vietnam" the writer said that: "...I caught the familiar sounds of "Green Bamboo;" "Especen," and "Darling Café;" Hanoi's most well known hubs for low-budget travelers". We have 3 houses nearby using a same reception lobby from the main house at 28 Tho Xuong street address.
