You'll be given a pair of earphones for the audio guide that provids historical and cultural information about the sights. Washington DC's tourist spots are really walking distances away if you're up for long walks, but the bus tour takes it to a different view up on the open deck. I love the audio recordings and music being played as you go through the traffic and across tourist spots. The sunset loop must be amazing but we got on the last 5pm bus so it got pretty dark along the way, making it half a night tour of the memorials. It went great and the Big Bus Tour app helps as well.

We were a bit confused at first because several roads were closed due to local events, so the buses had to reroute. Our original plan was to do the Red Loop on one day and the Blue Loop the next, but everything got mixed up since the buses weren't consistently following the routes indicated by their colors. Despite the confusion, the hop-on hop-off bus still saved us a lot of walking and was a convenient way to get around. I'd definitely recommend it for travelers who prefer to minimize walking or have limited time. Personally, I enjoy walking, so I realized I probably could have explored Washington, D.C. on my own. The city is very walkable, and it's easy to navigate between the major museums and landmarks. If you're comfortable using maps and don't mind walking, a DIY itinerary is a great option. But if convenience is your priority, the hop-on hop-off bus is still worth considering.
