The South Scenic Area of Changbai Mountain is located on the southern foot of Changbai Mountain. Compared to the North Slope and West Slope scenic areas, there are fewer tourists here, and the landscape is more pristine. It features the Yalu River Grand Canyon and the carbonized wood landscape, a relic of volcanic activity. Along the way up the mountain, you can also gaze at the North Korean scenery across the Yalu River, while the summit of the South Slope offers an expansive view of Tianchi Lake.
The South Slope of Changbai Mountain is close to Changbai Korean Autonomous County. It takes more than 2 hours to drive from Songjianghe Town, but transportation is not very convenient. It is usually recommended to charter a car directly to the scenic area. Within the scenic area, there is a tourist road of more than ten kilometers that runs alongside the Yalu River. The emerald green river winds and twists, and dense pine trees cover the riverbanks, creating a beautiful landscape. It is also common to see North Korean border guards waving from a few meters across the river.
On the mountains west of the Yalu River bank, there is a great wonder left after a volcanic eruption – the carbonized wood forest. Large areas of tall trees were pressed into the earth due to sudden changes in terrain during the magma's burning, and then lay dormant for many years.
However, the South Scenic Area of Changbai Mountain is temporarily not open to individual tourists. Currently, it is only open to tourists of specific products such as high-end customized tours, popular science tourism, and chartered tour groups, operating on a reservation system with limited numbers and times.
