Travel 130 kilometres away from Hanoi and discover the quaint rural district of Mai Chau in Hoa Binh province. The village is well-known among visitors for its stilt houses or pile dwellings, made of bamboo and timber. The houses are elevated up to 12 feet above the ground to avoid water damage, protecting its residents from the harsh elements. The village is surrounded by green rice fields, valleys and hills and this lets you fully indulge in the natural beauty of Vietnamese countryside. Travel along Thung Khe Pass, bike through rice paddy fields and lunch with the White Thai ethnic group. The pick-up was dumb and there were no confirmation for booking though I booked 5 days beforehand. Trip was good, vehicle and driving good, tourguide super nice and informative. Mai Chau is nice when bicycling but you will be more focus on driving 'cause the road is bumpy. You may try!

Our day trip to Mai Chau was memorable and well-organized. Our guide Ling was fun, kind, and flexible to our requests (e.g. paying extra to motorbike instead of bike ride and allowing us to try harvesting rice ourselves). The main event of this trip was going to Mai Chau — to be honest, the village visits were very small and more like rest stops. Expect a calming experience in the rice paddies above all else, and you will not be disappointed.

Pretty good experience to see the ethnic groups and their way of life. Cycling in the idyllic paddy fields was very calming and fun. Overall great experience. Our guide(Leo) was very nice and explained clearly on historical facts of the place.

The views are spectacular and did not disappoint at all. Food is good and the tour guide,Nam, was informative and friendly. The bicycle ride is the highlight of the tour. If time permits, do stay for a 2 day tour instead. We definitely enjoyed the tranquility of the nature in mai chau.

It's takes around 4 hours ride to/back Mai Chau and the sceneary is beautiful and good for relax. The lunch was great. The bicycle ride is just 2 hours and in 1st hour, some of the routes are quite narrow and with ups and down with lots of rocks on the road. The tour guide has just brief introduction the minority culture. With the long ride, it's better to take 2 days trip to Mai Chau.

Mai Cháu exceeded my expectations. The lunch was fantastic. Driver will super good. Tour guide was humorous and fun to chat with. Provided super informative history of the minority. The bike quality can improve but is enough to get you through the biking journey.

Tour guide was good, foods were delicious and the entire tour was nice. Quite tiring on the cycling, but we enjoyed it. For those who will bring small children who cannot cycle, there were bicycles with child-seat. But be prepared to cycle thru the hill for less than 2 hours :)

A very peaceful and beautiful countryside with some nice folks. The journey takes 4 hours from Old Quarter, so a 2-day tour is recommended due to the long travel time. Still worth the trip nevertheless.
