《森と彫刻の境界 | The Boundary Between Forest and Sculpture》

Wood, as a sculptural medium, inherently carries the traces of time. Its rings, fissures, moisture, weight, and grain preserve the memory of organic formation. Even through the act of carving, the material does not entirely relinquish its original vitality, but continues to exist in a shifting state between the natural and the constructed.
Bringing together Ai HAIBARA 灰原愛, Akiko TOJO 東條明子, Min Yao HU 胡閔堯, Kei KAIYA 海谷慶, Yosuke TAKASAKI 高崎洋祐, Hisanori KOJIMA 小島久典, Hideki IINUMA 飯沼英樹, and Emi KATSUTA 勝田えみ, eight contemporary wood sculptors, this exhibition examines the relationship between forest and sculpture through distinct material approaches and sculptural languages.
The works presented retain the raw irregularities and textures intrinsic to wood, while transforming them through meticulous intervention into forms that appear at times almost synthetic. Here, sculpture is not merely an act of shaping matter, but a process of revealing duration, memory, and residual traces of life embedded within the material itself.
Within this context, the “forest” does not function simply as an image of nature, but as a latent condition residing within the material. Even after being cut, carved, and displaced, the wood continues to carry an internal sense of temporality and organic presence.
The “boundary,” therefore, is not understood as a fixed division between nature and artifice, but as a transitional space in which both continuously intersect, permeate, and transform one another.
Through the language of contemporary sculpture, the exhibition ultimately raises a question: After sculpture comes into being, does the forest still remain within the work?

Neptune Gallery was founded in 2018 by artist Hu Min-Yao in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, Japan.
With a profound aesthetic foundation and the artist’s unique vision, the gallery has led its team in shaping new perspectives. At its inception, the gallery focused on sculptures, mineral pigment paintings, and oil paintings as its primary offerings to establish its brand identity. Through a cross-disciplinary and integrative approach, it has built a comprehensive business system that spans art education, exhibition curation, and commercial gallery operations. By actively participating in art fairs, Neptune Gallery has enhanced its visibility and created a fresh and distinctive brand presence in the art world.
Adhering to the principles of “Exquisite, Professional, and Innovative,” Neptune Gallery blends classical heritage with contemporary thinking as its core values. With the aim of becoming an internationally influential contemporary art team, the gallery continuously discovers and cultivates artists with unique perspectives and creativity. It is dedicated to organizing academically rich contemporary art exhibitions and providing collectors with professional art advisory services.
In the autumn of 2018, Neptune Gallery relocated its operations from Tokyo to Taipei, establishing its base in Neihu, a central district in Taipei. This move marked a strategic effort to deepen engagement with the northern Taiwan art market. The gallery has actively promoted art programs, fostering cultural and artistic exchanges on an international scale. Simultaneously, Neptune Gallery has worked to connect with the Asian art industry network, positioning itself for the global art market.
In 2025, Neptune Gallery embarks on a new phase of development, officially relocating to Anping, Tainan. With its rich historical and cultural heritage, Anping serves as a new foundation for expanding the gallery's influence in the art market. Through this new base, Neptune Gallery aims to establish an Asian art platform in southern Taiwan. Looking ahead, the gallery will continue to participate in international art fairs, presenting innovative artistic styles and profound cultural narratives, shaping a new chapter in contemporary art.
