Presented as a charming country hotel, the Criterion- the Cri, has significant pros & cons. My goal is to provide realistic expectations; if you seek a basic comfortable stay - this is NOT your place. If you want boisterous pub atmosphere, this is your place. Overall; pleasant staff, standard pub fare, awful overnight experiences. Management’s priority is the pub patrons - we applaud them for taking this responsibility seriously. However, we chose this location for its represented charm & proximity to the Warwick Train Station for our steam train trip between Warwick & Stanthorpe. As frequent road trippers, we’ve stayed in many small town pub hotels in NSW, QLD, & VIC. We understand & typically enjoy our stays & their unique histories. That noted, it’s evident that the Cri’s pub is where they invest time/money, not lodging. Only basic rooms were available & here’s my honest assessment: guestrooms/halls have peeling wall paint/paper (our room had a hole punched in the wall); roof has many leaks & carpets sorely need replacing; sink had no hot water & barely a trickle of cold; no heat source but extra blankets available; sheets clean & beds reasonably comfortable if you can sleep through the noise. The rear courtyard was ridiculously loud. I used Loop earplugs & they didn’t help. Patrons are either unaware or don’t care that there are guests sleeping. Courtyard cleanup begins promptly at 0700 with a leaf blower. Manager was responsive when made aware but we won’t stay again.

Close to shops and food areas

The rooms were uber basic! No side tables, trading lamps and only shared bathroom, toilets. It was VERY noisey with a beer ‘garden’ right under the rooms. If the Aussie ‘outback’ wants to have people stay longer, it needs to improve. It’s. All very well being an old ‘traditional’ hotel. That was ok in the 1930’s. It’s 2026 now!!

Would never stay there again

Spotless room. Lovely bar staff. Just a fantastic old pub.

Friendly staff. Good sized clean room at reasonable price.

Room was clean and shared toilet bathroom also. A place to put our heads down at night, after a great day at the Warwick Celtic Festival.

We stayed in the "Princess" room at the Criterion which has its own bathroom. It is an old hotel but the room has been refurbished and is great value for money. Very spacious and lots of old world charm. There is a pub downstairs so a bit of noise from that but convenient for dinner. We stayed during the week so wasn't that noisy.

So bad that we did not stay
