Great place to stay and relax. So many things to do in walking distance. Friendly businesses around the hotel make the experience great.

Great value for the money. Room was clean but rugs were a little dirty, loose tile in the bathroom, windows a little dirty but nothing terrible. Shower pressure was great, towels were thick n soft, beds firm. Office chair by desk was very worn and should have been replaced (missing entire sections of faux leather covering). Maybe a little more attention to detail. Reservation was clear but messages were a little confusing since they were coming from the Cavalier Resort, and not Sands by the Sea. As it turns out, Sands is the little sister to the more expensive, nicer Cavalier. Either way, we had a very positive experience and would definitely stay there again!

Check in was next door at the other hotel. My room was dirty and had hair all over shower wall and the towels hung up looked like this been there awhile

When my family and I pulled in the motel's parking lot, we instantly had misgivings. The facility looked unkempt. What must have historically been the check-in parking area, was converted to a makeshift outdoor lounge, complete with a vending machine. There was no front desk. On what apparently used to be the Front desk's entry door, we found a sign directing us to the front desk of a neighboring motel. There, I spoke with a young man who advised this venue was helping The Sands with check-ins. We chose to move across the Freeway to The Hampton Inn.

Traveled with my teen son who wanted to see the beach before heading back to school. This was honestly the perfect setting. The hotel is right ON the beach. The firepits with chairs around them is such a nice touch. There's a massive chess & checker board game set on the beach too. The beach is so clean and beautiful. Another thing I loved is that this area of the beach seems to be secluded and meant for only the guests of the hotel. I'm not sure if that's so, but there weren't a ton of people. Most beaches you go to are so overly crowded. This one wasn't. The hotel's an older place but seems well kept. Parking is included and that's a plus! I've found that so many hotels make you pay extra just to park your car. There's several restaurants close by within walking distance and even a mini mart. The Hearst Castle is less than 4 miles away with other attractions being close by. Like, the lookout area for the sea lions and walruses. San Simeon park and the Lighthouse are also nearby. All pluses! Why did I give it 4 stars instead of 5? NO A/C! I didn't know this when I booked and think it should be mentioned. Our rooms got up to 89 degrees and all they could offer was a floor fan, which they quickly brought up. Trying to fall asleep in a humid 89 degrees was miserable! All windows face the west so the setting sun heats up your room fast! It felt like the heat was trapped in our room even though all windows were opened. Even our door. Other than that, A+

We enjoyed our stay and here are the Pros and the Cons. Because if your’e a decent human you will appreciate constructive criticism. :). We loved the location, the fire pits at night, the beach, of course! We did get moved to a quiet section and we did have a partial ocean view which was nice. This hotel was bought by another hotel so you couldn’t check in at Sands you had to go to Cavalier. The hotel lobby had delicious cookies and the staff were friendly and helpful. So back to the room, the carpet area where you walk in was soaking wet. I was worried about mildew so they did come up with some towels that we could walk on until they dried. You could tell that the place needed a lot of renovation. If you like rustic and affordability, this is a place for you. My husband’s bed had a huge dips in it. It was as if they turned it around so at least he wasn’t sleeping in a boat. The light fixture in the bathroom was coming loose and it looked like they hadn’t dusted the lampshades or got cobwebs off the ceiling either. The sheets smelled pretty strong, which I was surprised being on the coast you’d think it would be Non scented and more environmentally friendly. The shower and sink water had a very strong smell of chlorine. It’s a good thing we are surfers and can handle things like this for the most part. The place could definitely use a lot of work. So maybe they will have great deals in the winter and I will come back to see the whales.! That would be nice. :)

Amazing as always. Always enjoy our stay here when we do our group trips

The room was in need of renovation and there was no AC. We were told to open the window but the screen had a large rip which allowed bugs in. The hotels amenities were amazing. The fire pits and the views of the ocean made up for any inconveniences.

Direct beach access, quiet

This is a beautiful property. I have stayed here several times, although this time I could really see the impact of the water shortage. The lawn area in the back of the property was not well kept. Stunning views and access to the beach is right there. Lawn games and fireplace we're great. The hotel room was just your average room. Though showing it's age, it was clean and the beds are comfortable. It's a short 7 min drive to Cambria and Hearst Castle is close by.
