The ocean with its waters smashing against humongous rock formations, the lush mountains right behind you as you face the ocean- beautiful!
Niu Shan Huting is situated in Shoufeng Township, a rural township located in Hualien County. It is about 30 minutes ride from Hualien City along the East Coast line. Niu Shan Huting is relatively unknown to foreign tourists. We ventured into this beautiful place on our Taiwanese tour guide’s recommendation. According to our tour guide, ‘Niu Shan’ used to be a ground for grazing of cattle decades ago. ‘Niu Shan’ has the same meaning as ‘Huting’ in the Formosan language of the Amis tribe, the largest ethnic group among Taiwanese aborigines. Thus it is named as ‘Niu Shan Huting’ when the owner, an Amis aborigine, decided to open a recreation establishment there.
If you enjoy rocky beaches, this is the place to visit. The rocks are right at the water's edge, and you can scramble around the tops of them and get a great view of the ocean. There are no protective railings so I don't recommend taking small children. There are some railed viewing points near the parking area and public bus stop that simply overlook the water, but the rock formations are much more interesting.
