  • 2026 Bay Area Dance Art Season Proudly presented by HSBC Life Hong Kong Dance Company Large-Scale Dance Drama “Wudao” – The Form and the Infinite of Bruce Lee
  • "Actually, martial arts and philosophy might seem opposed at first glance, but I believe the boundaries between the theory of Chinese martial arts and philosophy have already become blurred... I hope to integrate the spirit of philosophy into martial arts, which is why I persist in studying philosophy." -- Bruce Lee, "Artist of Life"
  • Elaborately crafted by the Hong Kong Dance Company, paying tribute to the legendary martial arts master Bruce Lee! Professional dancers with years of deep cultivation in martial arts training will interpret Bruce Lee’s martial arts philosophy and artistic charm through a body language that combines hardness and softness, accompanied by a live jazz band performance.
  • Premiered last year at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and toured last month at the Grand Theatre of the Shanghai International Dance Center, attracting nearly 10,000 audience members and receiving widespread attention!

[Recommendation Reasons] Bring together local artistic elites of Hong Kong An all-star creative lineup composed of Artistic Director Yip Wing-hong (Yang Yuntao), Hong Kong Film Award Best Art Director Man Lim-chung, and famous jazz composer Ted Lo Crossover innovation blending martial arts and dance, multimedia stage design, and jazz elements Showcasing the unique charm of Hong Kong where Chinese and Western cultures converge Inheriting and promoting the martial arts spirit of Bruce Lee

  • Founded in 1981, the Hong Kong Dance Company is one of the most representative professional dance art organizations in Hong Kong. For over forty years, the company has always rooted itself in Chinese culture, continuously exploring the dialogue between tradition and the contemporary. From adapting the classic film "A Chinese Ghost Story" to drawing inspiration from Hong Kong manhua in "Storm Riders"; from reproducing the spirit of calligraphy in "Lanting Ritual Ji" to exploring the integration of martial arts and dance in "Shanshui", piece after piece of work constantly breaks through the creative boundaries of traditional dance, gradually forming an artistic style that possesses both Hong Kong cultural characteristics and an international vision. Born on the occasion of the Hong Kong Dance Company's 45th anniversary, "Wudao" continues this creative lineage. Taking Bruce Lee's martial arts philosophy as inspiration, the work uses dance to rethink the relationship between "martial arts" (Wu) and "the Way" (Dao), power and freedom, tradition and the contemporary, allowing martial arts and dance to meet within the same body.
  • Hong Kong Dance Company Artistic Director Yip Wing-hong spent many years conceiving “Wudao”, deeply influenced by Bruce Lee’s view that “martial arts is the best way to help us understand ourselves.” Therefore, he led the dancers in continuous martial arts training, internalizing martial arts concepts such as Wing Chun and Jeet Kune Do into bodily language, making “martial arts and dance as one” a true expression happening within the dancers. Art direction and costume design are crafted by Hong Kong Film Award Best Art Director Man Lim-chung. He brings the spatial narrative of film and Bruce Lee’s philosophical core of “having no form as form, having no limit as limit” into the theater: flowing ink washes, multimedia calligraphy special effects, and intertwined light and shadow construct a stage landscape with a strong oriental aesthetic, making the audience feel as if they are inside a flowing film. Music is composed by Hong Kong jazz pianist and film score composer Ted Lo. Traditional drumbeats, electronic sounds, and jazz vocabulary intertwine with the dancers’ breath, exertion, and rhythm to collectively build the bodily rhythm of “Wudao”. Beyond the music that matches the story, plot, and characters, Ted Lo also improvises based on the live atmosphere, just like Jeet Kune Do which is unrestricted by established moves.
