Way Shack Hostel

Great staffs

Clean, nice, generous and helpful staffs,

Staff did not say hello or welcome us politely upon arrival, but did let us check in about 20 minutes early. Later in the day, we returned to the "shack", and noticed there was no hand soap in the bathroom, we asked for the WiFi password, and asked for the remote control to the television. We were then given some confusing excuse that the TV did not work due to compilcations due to the COVID lock down (which as we all know happened about 3 years ago at this point). The story about the unavailability of the TV became the sticking point in the minds of the couple running the hostel. When we tried to reassure the woman that we were disapointed about the TV, but were willing to go without, for some inexplicable reason she pressed the issue and began asking for forgiveness and walked away, only to come back to our room two more times, knocking heavily, insisting on speaking with us on the issue again! My wife asked her to stop disturbing us which she seemed reluctant to do. Finally, my wife felt uneasy after our interaction with the woman and insisted we find another hotel due to the uprofessional behaviour of the couple running the place and the unavailability of hostel staff. I regret leaving this negative review, but honestly do not understand why our experience is so different compared to other reviews here. The husband told me, that if we were not happy, to go ahead and complain to Expedia. I cannot recommend this place. Avoid at all costs, not worth the price or convenience.

Staff very nice

No water, no TV, mold all over the walls in the bathroom. The reception had no idea i was checking in that day, even though I booked the room a week in advance. We left even though we booked for 2 night.

Highly recommendable.

It’s the perfect distance from the whale diving, simple convenient clean and friendly, but do know that this is a simple hostel, this one had ice cold air and the private room was perfect for me. It was just right for a single or couple, but having kids with you is a bit of a stretch.

Very reasonable facilities and very covenient if you are going to swim with the Whale Shark s or going to the falls.

The room as fairly small but had everything we needed for a single night. There’s not a lot to do in the evening other than have something to eat at one of the few restaurants but as you’ll be getting up early it’s probably not the priority. Like most tourists we were here to do the whale shark trip. The location is perfect two minutes walk from where the boats leave. We got up at 4:00am and were in the queue by 4:15. We were about 30 from the front but by the time we’d done some waiting around been briefed and got our Life jackets it was 5:50 and the sun was up. We were supposed to be on boat 4 but some people seemed to be slow to get going and so we were promoted to boat 2 which was actually the first boat out! The sea was a bit rough but after just 5 minutes paddle we were with the whale sharks and soon in the water. I really enjoyed seeing these amazing creatures up close. You are supposed to stay 5 metres away but no one seems to have told the whale sharks at they come much closer! Back to the hotel after the viewing for a shower. We were really thankful that we were so close and could get into dry clothes and have breakfast next door. All in all a great place to stay the night before seeing the whale sharks.
