Great location - central to everything Very very handy location

Being 800+ yrs old there is no lift. Room on 2nd floor with large heavy luggage is hard work but chap at reception helped - on arrival, noone around on check out. Bathroom light and fan very temperamental. Mind you head of over 6Ft tall. Beam in 5ft 8". Doorway also under 6Ft high. No refrigerator. No aircon. But great location for Radcliffe Camera, libraries and colleges.

The Tower House is an undeniably quaint 17th century townhouse located smack dab in the middle of Oxford. Unless you want to pay four times the price to stay at one of the handful of higher-end chain hotels that are equally centrally-located, the location simply cannot be beat. Sure, it would benefit enormously from some fairly superficial and probably long-overdue updates, like new carpeting. But all the essential elements for a safe, convenient and reasonably-priced stay in central Oxford are there. The only thing I really wished they had done better was pre-arrival communication. Unlike a lot of other small properties that aren't staffed 24 hours a day, I received virtually no information from the Tower House prior to arrival. There is sign taped on a window providing a WhatsApp number to call if you need to contact someone, and once I figured out how to do that they were helpful enough, providing instructions for how I could store my luggage until check-in time. It would have been much easier, however, if I had received some sort of detailed message the day before my arrival making all those details clear. At least in my experience, it's that sort of careful forethought on the part of a proprietor about what it feels like to show up after fifteen hours of international travel to a locked door with no one about to welcome you that separates the okay but clearly informally run family operation from the character-filled boutique property..

I'll start with what we did like. It's very well situated and the centre of town was at the end of the street. What we didn't like: The front door was shut. We rang the doorbell. No reply. Called reception. No answer. Finally after trying the mobile phone number taped to the window, someone answered. This all happened while standing outside in the rain. I was then given the instructions on how to get in. These included the code to the key safe to open the front door only, directions to the (unmanned) reception where my room key would be in an unspecified "basket", I was told which room I'd be in and where to find the room. These instructions were not emailed to me in advance, they were recited to me rapidly while i hadn't even opened the front door. I was also told (for the first time) that my room would be on the first floor and the communal toilet and shower would be on the second. If I had known these facilities were shared I would not have booked here. Upon accessing the room, it smelled like someone had only left 5 minutes ago. The walls were scuffed, dirty and mouldy. The shower in the shared bathroom was dirty and mouldy too. I didn't shower the whole time I was there. I didn't see any staff while i was there and quite honestly felt like i was staying in student accommodation. In summary, I would not stay here again and was glad to leave.

wifi not working very well. not easy getting in to the room. very old and needs to be upgraded

We arrived at check in time and there was no one to greet us. We called the contact numbers on the door and left 2 messages and no returned our call. It was not until another guest arrived that she was able to call and speak to someone and then spoke on our behalf. Room was incredibly small. Location was fantastic.

Near the shops, but parking difficult and expensive. Kettle in the room could only be used on the floor as flex too short. Not as clean as would have liked.

The bathroom wasn’t clean when I checked in- there also wasn’t anyone at the front desk and the check in process was confusing- people kept ringing the doorbell to try to get in because there weren’t instructions. It was a mediocre experience, but definitely expensive for what it is

Beautiful rustic little townhouse right in the heart of Oxford, close to everything and ideal for our stay.

Great, quirky little place in an excellent location. Don't expect a brand new hotel but for a very old town house it exceeded our expectaions.
