The location was perfect. History behind the building was amazing. Service was prompt and friendly. Everything marks perfect scores but I had to take one star off for the layout of the rooms. Pack lightly - you can never reach anywhere without stairs. We had to carry our luggage and walk up one flight to the reception. In the room, the toilet was downstairs with the bed but the sink and shower was upstairs in the mezzanine - another set of stairs. It felt weird not being able to wash my hands after using the toilet (both #1 and #2). There is hand sanitizer in the toilet, but to me it wasn’t enough and I almost felt guilty stepping out the door without washing hands. If you can look past these, the bedding and amenities were more comfortable than my own and the view was amazing. The location can’t be beat. I recommend this hotel for younger couples with no mobility issues or babies to carry.

Historic building is neat. Decore is nice and interesting. Location is perfect. Price is high. Amenities suffer due to historic building and layout. Many stairs from canal or square and in room (we stayed in letter room). There are elevators from the canal and street but they don't eliminate all stairs and can be slow/long wait). Toilet and sink in our room on separate floors. Room was very dark, difficult to navigate if you get up in the night without switching on lights and disturbing others in the room. Fridge is mostly a pay- bar with little room for items brought to the room, and not very cold. In room cocktail amenities are interesting,but expensive and no ice available in the room. For this price having one complimentary cocktail would introduce the unique cocktail capabilities of the property and extend some appreciation to guests. Air con is barely adequate. Tablet system to communicate to the front desk is buggy and ineffective. Items used to decorate the room (books, miscellaneous items on end tables and desk) give the room character but ultimately get in the way. Had to ask for towels one day and a fresh still water. Not a big deal but for the level of boutique experience being charged I expected a bit more. Overall a fine property with charm, character and a great locstion but that charm and character comes with a high price tag and significant trade offs (may be worth it for some, may not be for others).

My two night stay at the 1898 hotel in Ghent is one of the best experiences I can remember at a hotel. Every person I interested with exemplified customer service. The upgraded room was absolutely amazing with a gorgeous view over the church and city square. And the honesty bar? Wow, just wow. And, the hotel was the perfect starting point for me to explore the city for the first time. I’ll definitely be back.

1898 The Post is a beautifully restored 19th-century post office, perfectly located in the heart of Ghent’s historic old town. From the moment we arrived, Amy made us feel genuinely welcome, providing a warm introduction to the hotel, a helpful orientation to our room, and excellent recommendations to make the most of our short stay. Our room was elegant and comfortable, and while the bed was a little narrower than we would have preferred, we still enjoyed a good night’s sleep. What truly made this hotel memorable, however, was the outstanding service. Every member of the team was friendly, attentive, and genuinely committed to ensuring guests had a wonderful experience. A charming heritage hotel in an unbeatable location, made even better by hospitality. Highly recommended.

Great place in the heart of Ghent. Walking distance to many sites. Excellent room and helpful staff!

We loved this hotel. Perfect location, charming hotel, excellent staff and wonderful breakfast. The bar is exceptional with an extensive and elegant cocktail list. This is a 5 star hotel for sure!

Unique interior design, beautifully done. Very friendly and helpful staff. Late check out and my husband stayed in the (not open) bar lounge for the afternoon whilst I did some sightseeing, as he wasnt feeling great. Fantastic breakfast. We had a large room with an upstairs mezzanine bathroom (beware if you have mobility problems). Despite being in a busy location our room was very quiet. Pricey but truly a wonderful place for a weekend break.

Everything was just wonderful. Staff were professional but also friendly and so very attentive. Our room (although not much floor space) was absolutely beautiful. Such a lovely place. Excellent quality linens and towels, beautiful bathroom, amazing view over the square. Just such a beautiful building and so very tastefully designed into the hotel.

Fantastic hotel. The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. The room was clean and very comfortable and had air conditioning. The cocktails, in the bar, were great and the buffet breakfast was delicious. A gorgeous hotel, situated perfectly in the old part of Ghent, with secure parking not far away.
