My parents and I really enjoyed the tour! Elliot was really engaging with questions and my parents who mainly speak mandarin were able to understand him as he used basic English and draw relation to the fishes' names in mandarin and teochew/canto/hokkien and also was able to understand the takeaways on sustainability. My dad is someone who is very keen in this and he said that he would have wanted to see the auction happening if there were. I do understand that the tour happens after the 'action' so it's less crowded, so an improvement suggestion could be for the guides to include a section to describe how it's done or show a video.
As someone who has not given much thought to the fish i eat, the Fishery Port Tour was an eye-opening introduction to the seafood industry in Singapore. It is pretty amazing to see how lively and bustling the fish port is at a time when most of Singapore is asleep. The tour touched not only on the variety of fish sold but also covered the history and the cultural legacy of fish merchants. I especially enjoyed the cultural tidbits like how the payments for fish are still cash only and recorded in print. Elliot was the tour guide for my group and his knowledge of the seafood practices and fish species was extensive. While it will still take a long time for me to differentiate the species of fish, it was great to participate in this immersive experience about the fish we consume every day. The tour also served as the perfect Father's Day gift for my father. Do note that the fish smell sticks to your clothes, slippers and hair. So be prepared accordingly.
Amazing visit! Guide was great and gave very interesting explanations about the supply chain, and fishing sustainability.
Was quite an experience being at the fish market. there were lots and lots of fish and they do sell individual pieces to retail customers. I will recommend to bring a fan because it can get pretty hot and stuffy even though it is open air.
