We stayed in Oxford on one of the hottest weeks of the year. We were so lucky that we were staying in a separate building behind the hotel and had air conditioning. The rest of the hotel did not and this caused a lot of problems. Our room was nice - appeared to be accessible as lots of hand rails and emergency cord in shower. It was, however, very noisy. People above sounded like elephants! Be aware that there is a 12.5% service charge on drinks. This is not anywhere on the drinks menu. Staff very nice, although appeared to make life difficult fro themselves when they decided to tell guests that the air con was broken. Guests soon discovered there wasn't actually any air con to break! Nice location and easy access to Oxford.

7 days of brutal heat with no AC. Impossible to sleep or get relief. There are other options for the same price or less with AC.

Staff had limited interest and energy to assist at the front desk. Chief unsatisfactory aspect was no air conditioning and the summers there are sweltering. They gave us a fan that was not a help at all, particularly because the windows did not open more than an inch. The lack of air conditioning is no where on the web site. This did not seem like a four star hotel.

Unfortunately, I stayed one night on June 26th, in the heatwave. I checked in early and was put in a room (304) under the eaves. It was like an oven. I ran the two fans for an hour, which made no difference. I enquired about changing rooms, but the hotel was fully booked. Staff were as helpful as they could be - nothing they could really do. I did think there should have been more staff on duty: one person in Reception, running the bar in the lounge and fielding a stream of complaints about the heat was not enough. He was polite and tried his best but needed help. In hot weather, make sure you book a room in the newer parts of the hotel and insist on aircon - not fans. The small double eaves room would still have been warm even in winter, I think! But not unbearable, as it was that night.

Not a great place to sleep while there was a heatwave as there was no air conditioning!! Two small fans provided did little or nothing sadly.

I stayed for one night. It was hot. The air conditioner wasn't working, the windows barely opened, the curtains were very dirty, and it was literally hard to breathe. On top of that, the housekeeping lady tried to barge in three times during the morning. She first came in around 9:00 a.m.; later, I returned from breakfast and found her changing the bed linen—even though my personal belongings were still in the room. I asked her to leave. Apparently, that wasn't enough for her, as she came back again 30 minutes later, even though there was still an hour and a half left before check-out. When I mentioned this at the front desk, they were completely indifferent. I suppose this is their standard of service. It’s disappointing.

Insufferably hot. Our room had Aircon installed in the ceiling, but seemed to be decommissioned (blank control panel). Unpleasant drain smell. No actual bar, have to go to reception and request drinks from a drinks menu, 75% off which was unavailable. Too much penny pinching , Mercure!! On the plus side, fantastic location.

Staff were very nice but staying in the heatwave was a nightmare. The fans provided weren’t very effective (I had to ask for another one which was provided). The rooms were ok but a bit tired- but this is reflected in a reasonable price for central Oxford. I would stay there again for that reason.

No air con, no way to cool room in hot weather, no restaurant or room service, limited bar. Poor cleanliness outside hotel at back. Staff were helpful in difficult circumstances for them. Having happily used this hotel many times over the last 20 years we will not return until we hear of of changes to facilities or management
