活字印刷技術は香港の無形文化遺産の 1 つです。オフセット印刷とデジタル印刷は長い間広く使用されてきましたが、活字印刷のエレガントな職人技に代わることはできません。
1950年代、香港では活字印刷が大流行し、当時の新聞、チラシ、帳票などはすべて活字印刷で作られていました。印刷の際には、タイプライターで彫刻・鋳造された鉛ペレットを一つ一つ専用の金属板上に整然と並べ、インクを付けて印刷するという、ミスのない丁寧な作業が行われます。これらの単語の粒子は、何度も配置され、印刷され、再編成され、文化と知識の生きた伝達体となります。
かつて、中環と上環エリアには活字印刷所が数多くあり、活字製造所、洋紙店、インク店も繁栄していました。かつての活字産業の繁栄は過ぎ去りましたが、上環に残る活字活字工芸の継承者を訪ねることで、今でもこの活字工芸の非凡な特徴を体験することができます。
