Yiyuan Garden is a private garden built by the wealthy gentry Gu Wenbin during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. Built late among Suzhou gardens, it was able to draw on the strengths of various gardens, forming its characteristic eclectic style. Due to its compact layout and skillful design, it possesses high ornamental value. The entire garden covers an area of about nine mu, long and narrow from east to west. The garden scenery is divided into eastern and western parts according to local conditions, separated by a double corridor. The flower windows on the corridor walls connect the eastern and western views, increasing the sense of depth. The eastern part of the corridor is dominated by courtyard buildings, with winding corridors surrounding pavilions and courtyards, adorned with flowers, trees, and rockeries. Looking through the empty windows of the winding corridors, all views become rich and meaningful traditional Chinese paintings. The western part of the corridor is the main scenic area of the entire garden, with a pond in the center, surrounded by rockeries, flowers, trees, and buildings. The central water surface gathers, while the eastern and western ends are narrow, with winding bridges and water gates built to signify the circulating and endless flow of the pond water. The rockery north of the pond is entirely stacked with beautiful Taihu stones. Although the mountain is not high, it has peaks, ridges, caves, and valleys, complementing the trees and mountain pavilions. The main hall, Ouxiang Xie (Lotus Fragrance Pavilion), is a four-sided hall in the style of a mandarin duck hall. It faces the pond to the north and the courtyard to the south, with a small bridge and flowing water to its right, and pavilions, verandas, caves, and ravines to its left and right, from which one can reach various scenic spots in the western part. The eastern and western parts also house dozens of stone tablets with calligraphy and paintings by famous people from various dynasties, available for viewing and appreciation, known as the "Yiyuan Fatie" (Calligraphy Rubbings of Yiyuan Garden).
