The place was nice, cool pool and lounging area, nice restaurant and breakfast was good. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The standard room I had was fairly basic and needed some updating, but okay. Location was fine, only 10 minutes walk to the beach, although you have to cross the main road to get to the main street that goes down to the beach, which has lots of bars massage places and shops on.

The Motive cottage put in a different building called the Tony lodge, although I clearly booked with Motive Cottage

Room: mould on shower wall, wall fixing for shower head unsecured (resulting in the hose firing off water uncontrollably around the shower room!), holes in the bed sheet, no hair-dryer, no iron (not even on request).

Great hotel with good price, good location and breakfast, highly recommend

This is a nice hotel, since we had a car, we could stay at this hotel, which is not near the beach. Instead we drove to different beaches and waterfalls for variety. White Sand beach was the best for us.

Stayed here 9 nights in early February for a scuba diving vacation. Great location on the highway, where there are many good restaurants, bars, laundry, pharmacy, food mart, 7-11, massage, etc... there is a currency conversion booth next door that gives a great rate of USD to THB of 98.7%. Also very close to the main road that runs to the beach, where most dive shops are located, plus most great restaurants, bars, massage and souvenir shops are located. Compared to Patang / Karon / Kata this area is far more rural and quiet... a very laid back atmosphere that I enjoyed much more than last year down south. Motive: clean comfortable bed and pillows, extra towels provided upon request, prompt maid service. But what I liked best was the breakfast buffet, awesome. Each morning a different combination of rice and noodle dishes. Never had the same dish twice. Kudos to the cook. Eggs made to order by the chef, served with bacon. Fresh watermelon and pineapple. Toast machine. Milk & cereal. Great coffee. Orange juice. Outside dining in a nice covered patio area. Will definitely book here again when I come back.

Overall, a great budget hotel if you are looking to be out and explore everyday instead of staying in. Located right across the street (very dangerous to cross as it has no pedestrian lights) from the street market, convenient stores and massage, and ~10 min walk from the beach. The hotel itself is very standard with close to no amenities. There is a small pool but I never used it and they serve daily breakfast buffet, though I believe there is a fee. The room is spacious and the air conditioning was 100% functional which is essential in the hot weather. I can't vouch for the cleanliness - there were spider webs in literally every corner in the room, and my bed sheets seemed like they could be cleaner. Water pressure was acceptable; however, don't expect to enjoy hot showers as the water heater somewhat heats up water, but they were no more than lukewarm water. There is also a small hole by the window of where lizards can freely roam in and out of my room which somewhat bothered me.

We stayed for 2 weeks here and really enjoyed the room and the locale. Bingo restaurant is just two minutes walk and serves excellent thai food for a very good price all night. Mars bar up the road is and excellent bar in the evenings and e local market is just across the road. The room is very nice, the only thing i would change is the bed has no headboard and there is a line of bricks poking out of the wall at head level, a little precarious.

Close to the Khao Lak action, Motive Cottage is on the "highway" through town, across the road from the "Main Street" where many shops and restaurants are to be found. So while there is highway noise (nicely masked by the pool's waterfall), you don't get the noise of the massed crowds that likely run from dusk to dawn - but the location is perfect, because you can easily head over the road if that's your thing too! Motive's room are generously sized, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious - a much fuller fare then I expected for the price. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all, Motive gave us fantastic value for money. Of the 5 places we stayed in the Khao Lak area, my teenage daughter is recommending Motive to her friends as a place they could all stay on their SE Asia tour - affordable, safe, clean, close to the action with a great breakfast.
