The room we had booked was clean, however the shower and onsen area are very dim at night. Given that it’s a sulphur based onsen, there was a bunch of calcification around the shower corners. We also found a stink bug and yen sized spider roaming in our room. It wasn’t the worst hotel we’ve stayed in Japan but certainly not the best either. My other family members stayed at Muse Beppu and had a much better experience

A unique property and an outstanding concept and design throughout, my only negative and it is small, I didn’t think the finish of our room matched the rest of the hotel. Due to the rest of the hotel spaces being so meticulous and intentional it maybe set the bar too high for our room. I would recommend and stay again!

The dinner was served by a trainee which was fine but the one who managed the trainee is also a trainee.
The food was great but the service was average only.

Room was spacious and clean. The interior design was eye catching and definitely a selling point. The in room onsen was another highlight.

Having an actual onsen bath on the balcony in our room was 100% an absolute treat.
Otherwise, the rooms were very stylish and well appointed and we liked the futon style bed. It’s quite a quiet hotel and about an £8 taxi ride out of town but, we had no issues getting a taxi and actually the mud bath was only a short taxi ride away. If you were looking for somewhere peaceful with beautiful views over the bay then this is the place for you. As with many Japanese hotels, the staff spoke limited English and there was nothing that using Google translate couldn’t handle. Recommended.
