Super fun and historic, amazing people & location.

Great location, well kept room, I was very happy with my stay!

I knew this was a historical building prior to the trip. I was thinking quaint b&b but after seeing the property, I realized that was not an accurate description. The best part of this property was it was very inexpensive compared to others in the area and it is in a very great location. I booked the Melville house and upon arriving our room was not ready because we arrived early, which was fine and we were certainly willing to wait. However the lady at the front desk offered another room and explained to us that the room we booked did not have a television and that the bathroom was extremely small. The room we were offered was in a building next-door. I am thankful we were offered another room because the Melville house was extremely old and had a bad smell on the inside. However, the other room was also in a building that was pretty rundown on the inside. Additionally, the room we were given also did not have a television and had a very small bathroom as well. I figured that a TV was a standard amenity in a hotel room and not something I would need to check a listing to make sure would be available. Also, there is a skylight above the bed in the room we were given so if you have any intention of sleeping late, it’s definitely going to ruin that plan for you. Overall, it was just not the type of experience that I would expect from any hotel. No ice machine, no places to charge your electronics, and just overall very old and not functional.

The Melville is a perfect location! the Melville is a historic property, so don't expect modern, but for what we wanted it was perfect - the location AND onsite parking! It was also next door to the Vanderbilt Hotel and we enjoyed their cocktails on the rooftop with gorgeous views of the harbor and watched the sunset. Yes, it's old but charming. There is so much to do in Newport that really, all we did at the Melville House was sleep. The bed was comfortable, shower were too small but I managed; all in all it is a good value. Oh, you got to go to Co-Dough for doughnuts and cinnamon rolls - delicious!!!

The Melville was so cute, clean, and perfectly located!! Will DEFINITELY be returning!! The staff was beyond sweet, helpful, and accomodating!

Rick, the innkeeper was cordial and very accommodating. He upgraded our room and provided real good info about the area. The location was perfect with lots of shopping and restaurants within comforble walking distance. And a big factor for downtown Newport is that the inn had good parking and on our last day Rick let us park after we checked out so we could do some things in town and not have to drive around and look for parking. Great host, great property, great stay. Going to Newport? Skip the corporate chains and enjoy a slice of history in some cool older properties!

Staff were amazing

Location was ideal for accessing wharf and shopping. Parking was in short supply. A/C not operational in Melville building.
