The Shinkyo used to be called Yamasugeno-jabashi, which means snake bridge with sedge, or Mihashi, which just means respectable bridge. This bridge belongs to Futarasan Shrine and is designated as an important cultural property. In addition, Shinkyo was inscribed as the World Heritage in December 1999.
The bridge is 28m in length, 7.4m in width, 10.6m in height(from the surface of the water), and included 10 beams on both sides of railings, each decorated with round orbs(ginkgo), painted with black paint inside of bridge deck and Red paint in the other parts.
The bridge was regarded as a sacred bridge after it was built for mysterious reasons at the end of the Nara period. After it was rebuilt in Kanei's 13th year to its current appearance, it was only used for tribute coins such as generals imperial envoys and generally used when crossing the river. In addition, a temporary bridge (Nikko Bridge) is constructed downstream for use.
In Showa 48, in order to prepare for the 1200 year sacrificial house of Mentishantop Town in Showa 57, it was recruited to the outside world and has been extensively renovated since Heisei 9 to the present.
Shinkyo is known as one of the finest three bridges (Kintaikyo Bridge in Yamaguchi prefecture, Saruhashi Bridge in Yamanashi pref.), which is the oldest bridge in Japan in terms of drawbridge style built over the gorge.
About Nikko Futarasan Shrine Treasure Hall
Commemoration of the Completion of the Grand Restoration Project of the Main Shrine on Mount Nantai, dated 1240. Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Birth of Tochigi Prefecture and the 60th Anniversary of the Opening of the Treasure Museum.
Special exhibition: "Famous Sword · Sacred Treasures"
Originally planned as a special exhibition to commemorate the completion of the grand restoration project of the main shrine, the exhibition was postponed due to the pandemic. However, this year also marks the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Tochigi Prefecture. Therefore, we have decided to hold both commemorations simultaneously. This exhibition showcases the national treasures "Bizen Nagamitsu" and "Rai Kunitoshi," which are the two swords that have not been displayed since the Treasure Sword Exhibition held in 2012 (The 24th year of Heisei Period). In addition, we will exhibit precious sacred treasures. For example, there are the over 3-meter-long Tachi Sword "Nenokirimaru" and "Imono" (bestowed by the Imperial Family), as well as the "Mount Nantai Artifacts", which serve as symbols of faith.
