Cross Hands Hotel Old Sodbury by Greene King Inns

We booked the superior room and it did not feel superior at all. The property smelt of sewage. The place is run down and tatty. The bed and pillows were hard and lumpy. The bed frame was creaky and slats were broken. The shower tap fell off. When you drained water from tap/shower/bath the toilet bubbles up. All the paint was cracked and chipped. All the furniture was worn down and tatty. The walls were paper thin, we were woken up early from hearing doors opening and closing constantly. There were panels missing from around the toilet. All the walls were stained brown/yellow. Free view tv only no subscription services (Netflix etc). When we arrived we were placed in the wrong room and had to go to the reception to actually be put in the correct room. Pros- there was lots of parking. The room had a good fan. Bedding appeared clean and there were 2 extra pillows in the wardrobe (even though they were hard and lumpy)

On arrival the staff were very friendly and even upgraded our room. The room was clean and tidy, and very acceptable. Easily accessible to the old market town of Chipping Sodbury and the stunning village of Castle Combe which we did both. Enjoyed a late pint in the very good bar accompanied by some good 80’s music to help finish the day. Did not have breakfast as left swiftly for our ongoing journey to Wales. Only down side was there was quite if lot of traffic noise early from the main road/cross road immediately outside the hotel, mainly due to a car meet at the near by Castle Combe race track, so be aware of race/track days at weekend’s. Otherwise a good stop of with easy excess from and to the M4.

Lovely room comfy bed, a nice meal in the restaurant. There was a sound of water filling up in a tank every 10 minutes throughout the night, which disturbed our sleep.

There was no notification that the restaurant was out of order on either their website or Hotels.com, resulting in no dinner being served, nor any hot breakfast. The breakfast that was served however was very minimal, consisting of coffee, tea, some slices of toast and some muffins. There was also the problem of the room. There were large cracks in the wall of the bedroom (and I had noticed some very large holes in the wall in the hallway leading to the bedroom). The window was also very hard to open (which during a heatwave would have been nice...), and when it was open, it was either deal with a tiny crack, or have it open a bit wider, but risk having the window slam down. At least the shower was clean.

Positives. Staff friendly and helpful, food (dinner and breakfast) was enjoyable and well presented. Negatives. Decor was tired, handrails need cleaning, room windows need attention.

A friendly and well run and clean place to stay. Food is good.

Breakfast service wasn't good. Only one member of staff on duty serving.

On a busy road junction so some rooms are noisy. Staff are very friendly & helpful

Ancient coaching inn, much extended and modified, so many awkward staircases to negotiate, but that's all part of the historic charm of British pub hotels! Excellent car parking - plenty of easy space. Standard "chain pub" food: clean, fresh, hot and cheerfully served, but not inspired or inspiring. Greene King do, however, know how to brew and serve a proper beer, so overall "satisfactory plus".
