After a month in NZ, this was probably the nicest place we’ve stayed. It felt like we were visiting a friend’s home, instead of staying in a hotel.
Sitting room cozy, kitchen modern, fully equipped and clean. Hosts very friendly.
Close to town which wasn’t too touristy.

Hienoa Room was adequate but small. Patio area for Blue Room was on walkway to the pool so no privacy and a bit noisy. Common areas and kitchen were very nice. Convenient and good location for walking to town.

Overall, we enjoyed our overnight stay in this lovely old setting. Rooms were older, with the drawbacks of such history (smaller room, slightly musty) and the one big weakness of intermittent hot water!
But there were compensations - a really well appointed guest kitchen and lounge area, where you can prepare your own meals. This was perfect for us, to make our own healthy breakfast.
Overall, we would recommend it, but be careful of the hot water in the shower in winter!

Hienoa The Lodge is charming and our room (the Gold room) was spacious. Lady who welcomed us in was delightful and very helpful. The whole place could do with a thorough deep clean though - the hot tub actually had piles of dirt in it.
