About the event

Rome is in political turmoil. The singer Floria Tosca and her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, help a fugitive escape the ruthless police chief, Baron Scarpia, and Scarpia's obsession with Tosca turns into blackmail. Her choice is impossible: give herself to the man she despises, or lose the man she loves.

Composed by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, Tosca is based on Victorien Sardou's play La Tosca and premiered in Rome in 1900. Critics were lukewarm at first, but audiences quickly took it to heart, and it remains one of the world's most performed operas, loved for arias such as Tosca's 'Vissi d'arte' and Cavaradossi's 'E lucevan le stelle'. Puccini plays out love, jealousy, power and sacrifice among Rome's churches, palaces and rooftops, building to one of the most gripping finales in the repertoire.

English National Opera's production at the London Coliseum is directed by ENO Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon, who moves the drama to a mid-century concert hall in a European state under civil conflict. It is sung in English in a translation by Amanda Holden, with English surtitles. c8b8df50-ece1-4e3b-b775-079bec03c710-1779738327760-399916 ▲ Tosca WEB-HERO-2000x1000_S2627_02_Tosca_Update-2880x1920 ▲ Tosca
