About the event

Gajah Gallery Singapore is delighted to present Salutogenesis, Kayleigh Goh’s third solo exhibition that explores the profound connection between art, healing, and the human experience. Inspired by the concept of salutogenesis, an approach first introduced by the sociologist Aaron Antonovsky, this exhibition delves into the therapeutic potential of art and its ability to foster a sense of coherence and well-being.

For centuries, art and health have been intertwined, and recent years have witnessed the phrase "art and healing" gaining prominence. The idea that art has the ability to heal has inspired art exhibitions, workshops, and initiatives, particularly in the realm of mental health and wellness. As we navigate the depths of this exhibition, we are invited to contemplate the therapeutic aspects of art - a tool for promoting introspection, reflection, and solace.

Kayleigh Goh’s paintings have been known to focus on formal qualities. She composes her paintings with a motivation to adopt the formal qualities of wood and cement, and has been doing so ever since she began her journey as an artist. Cement and wood are materials we often associate with those used for buildings and physical spaces. It is thus no surprise to find that architecture is a significant source of inspiration for Kayleigh’s paintings, particularly Japanese architecture. With a combination of lines and texture, she masterfully composes these elements to construct the painterly spaces she is known for today. Her third solo show ultimately probes the question: what kind of healing powers do these painterly spaces have?

Through her latest array of paintings, Kayleigh Goh introduces a new level of comfort in her use of warm tones, glossy textures, and an expanded, yet subtle colour palette. Infusing her signature interplay between positive and negative space, the paintings continue to encourage introspection, inviting visitors to dwell in the artist's serene yet dynamic compositions. As we explore the works in Salutogenesis, let us consider the transformative potential of art and its capacity to guide us in maintaining a state of good health, fostering a profound sense of well-being, resilience, and inner harmony.

ABOUT KAYLEIGH GOH

Born in Johor Bahru and currently based in Melbourne, Kayleigh Goh is inspired by the psychological and poetic implications of place. Her works are soft and quiet, gently moving the viewer to contemplate ideas of home and rest. In the fast-paced life of the city, she allows us access to a metaphysical space where we can safely unpack unresolved emotions of despair. Her works then offer a temporary escape from the complexities and incongruities in life.

Using predominantly cement and wood, Kayleigh utilises highly sophisticated methods to create a sense of serenity. In modern times, society usually associates cement with coldness and Brutalism. The genius of Kayleigh’s work then lies in how she uses the material to create a paradoxical sense of calm. In the context of ‘too much’ (too many things to do, too much food to eat, too many thoughts), Kayleigh strives for balance. The warmth of the wood and the coldness of the concrete work together to achieve a dissonant, yet comfortable sense of harmony.

She received her BA (Fine Arts) from Singapore Lasalle College of the Arts in 2016 and has participated in solo and group shows in Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia. Most recently, in 2022, Kayleigh completed her MA in Contemporary Art at the VCA University of Melbourne, Australia.

About the organizer

Since 1996, Gajah Gallery has been a pioneering body in the Southeast Asian arts scene, representing a portfolio of the region’s leading artists as well as engaging the brightest emerging talents in contemporary art today. From humble beginnings in Singapore at Monk’s Hill, the Gallery has since expanded to a huge, beautifully-designed industrial warehouse space in Tanjong Pagar, and opened a second exhibition space in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Gallery also runs a collaborative platform and exhibition house, in the thriving arts city of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Each of these spaces are fuelled with a unique atmosphere, that invites an interplay of contemporary aesthetics and critical discourse.

Gajah Gallery remains dedicated to promoting artists from the region and highlighting their international relevance. Over the years the gallery has built a legacy of initiatives such as re-invigorating academic contributions to the category of Indonesian art and history, creating landmark shows such as Lokanat: Ground Zero which travelled to Yangon, Intersections: Latin American and Southeast Asian Contemporary Art which travelled to Havana, Cuba and the founding of art institute Yogya Art Lab (YAL). Through significant collaborations with Singapore Art Museum (SAM), National University of Singapore Museum, and hosting at least five spectacular exhibitions each year, Gajah Gallery cements its commitment to supporting leading artists and nurturing emerging international talent, ensuring our content is as compelling as our curatorial concepts.
