About kotoji
kotoji, solo moniker of Anjila Lim, is an independent singer-songwriter musician from Singapore. Her introspective and honest lyrics are accompanied by her bright, indie rock power pop sound as her way of expressing the youthfulness of even the heaviest of adult experiences.
kotoji started her musical journey at the age of four with her classically-trained mother teaching her the piano. Unable to adhere to classical teaching, she developed a keen interest in pop rock, alternative rock, indie rock, power pop and Japanese rock in childhood, which laid the foundation of her sonic identity. kotoji began learning guitar, bass and vocals at 11 years old. She spent her teenage years performing with Academy of Rock’s, Singapore’s pioneer popular music school, resident cover band, the AOR Band, as the bassist and back-up vocalist for four years before she left for the UK to pursue a higher education in Sheffield and London at the age of 18.
She also contributed to a number of student projects while at school, ranging from co-songwriting to back-up vocals and even assisting in vocal directing. She has since continued to further her songwriting and production skills, having worked with fellow artists as well such as penning English lyrics for Filipina Pop-Soul Singer,LU.ME, for her English version of her first single titled Gotta Let You Go and sessioning for Singaporean indie pop artist, JENE, on her single Ccoffee at midnight as the bass guitarist.
Since May 2020, kotoji has released four singles—amateur indie rock track, Roulette In My Head, indie dream pop tune, Everything, alternative rock ballad, Halfway to Heaven and the first single off of her first full length album, Please Don’t Do It.
kotoji was also part of the line-up for Lasalle college of the arts’ Rock and Indie Festival 2021 and performed live at the SIA Theatre. Scribbles of the First is only the beginning of more to come from kotoji.
