icon Intro: Xiamen Hulishan Fortress was built in 1894 (the 20th year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty). The protected area for cultural relics covers more than 55,400 square meters, including 13,000 square meters within the castle. It is divided into the battleground area, the barracks area, and the back mountain area. The fortress structure is a combination of a semi-underground bunker and a semi-city wall style, incorporating both European style and the architectural charm of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in China. Hulishan Fortress is a product of the Westernization Movement in modern China and has historically been known as the "Gateway to Eight Min and Key to the Southern Sky" due to its important location. The 28-cm Krupp cannon in the battleground area is the renowned "World Cannon King". It has been identified by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage as the "world's existing breech-loading coastal cannon manufactured in the 19th century and completely preserved at the original fortress site," and has been selected as a major site protection project during the National "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" and included in the Shanghai Great World Guinness Records. The iron mold cannon located in the back mountain area is a "unique masterpiece" of modern Chinese iron mold casting technology and a precious treasure of the fortress. As a beautiful calling card and important window for Xiamen tourism, Hulishan Fortress has become a composite cultural tourism and leisure scenic spot with profound cultural heritage, aesthetic value, and beautiful sea views on Xiamen Island Ring Road due to its rich historical and cultural value, unique coastal geographical location, beautiful natural ecological landscape, and rich tourism activities.
