We had a very nice stay at the El Royale Hotel. The room was very comfy and clean and thoughtfully decorated too, with a roomier refrigerator than your average hotel. The air conditioning worked great. All of the parking spaces are very close to the rooms. We were proactively given an easy to follow map that showed us how to walk to Universal Studios, which ended up saving us $40 per day in parking fees. Xavier was very kind, friendly, fun, and helpful. He helped us with parking, gave us water when we left, and made us feel welcome. Great hotel! We would definitely stay here again. (I should also note here that for families with very young little kids, or elderly family members, a night time half mile walk to Universal Studios might not be a great idea, because after all it is a big city along a busy street and all that goes along with that, even if it is in a nice part of Los Angeles. If you do not have little kids or elderly family members and you feel comfortable walking around a big city at night, it’s probably okay.)

Fun quirky little space. Great proximity to a lot of awesome things. The handyman on properties particularly amusing. Had some issues with our shower, though, and the blinds in the room don’t close completely to block the enormous amount of light in the courtyard and drive space at night. Lost some of it’s gripping power over the years. Had to tape our blinds shut to sleep.

Convenient location, clean room, comfortable beds. All the basics are covered well. Groceries, food joints within walking distance, parking spaces provided. Xavier was very helpful and fun to talk to. Needed to keep an eye on time, as there is no late check-in.

Don't be misled by the "Wonderful" ratings and reviews. This is a 2 star motel in the middle of LA. The location is not safe and the motel keys have a written reminder to lock doors that leave an ominous sense about the neighborhood. We had hoped to drop off our bags while visiting Universal Studios, but the motel office did not have a concierge available until 1pm. The only attendant was a gardener who insisted that we pay him a tip for watching our luggage. He suggested that we walk to the amusement park which was terrible advice. The air conditioner left the room humid and sticky and had a smell of mold. You can find a 4-star hotel that is cheaper than this rob. Avoid.

Good
This is a mixed review. We stayed 3 nights. The pictures on the website are not completely accurate. The property is split into to sides. It looks like it was two separate properties converted to 1 hotel. One side of the property is a single motel style property, which is where we stayed. The other has around 8 bungalow style rooms. Below is a breakdown of the good and bad. The good - friendly staff Comfortable beds Locked gate at night Convient location Good rates Free parking The bad - Dirty floors Tight parking No breakfast as shown in description. Limited office staff if you need towels Etc. No office access unless you walk around the gate to the the other side of the property. One night I ordered a pizza after a long day. Because there are 2 matching room numbers it was delivered to the wrong one. I had to walk out on the street after dark and try and hunt down my food. The front desk somewhat begrudgingly let me walk through the office to the other side of the property. Overall this place is of good value, but don't expect a room as advertised f you reserve from Expedia. Chances are you will get a room at the property next door. Those rooms are not as nice in my opinion. This place is older and a bit run down but not bad for what you pay which was around $110 on weekdays and 188 on Friday. If you are looking for a very basic room for the night this place is of great value however, I would not stay again unless I was on the other side of the property.

The mirror is possibly a two-way mirror. There was no gap between my finger. Water damage had the bathroom door completely split and swollen on the bottom with obvious mold/rotting wood. The room smelled weird. Small hairs all over the bathroom floor.

Staff were friendly and attentive and the check in/out was really easy. Parking was safe/gated. Breakfast was either a muffin or packaged oatmeal, but the hotel was walking distance to really good food of all kinds. We walked to and from Universal studios and Xavier even gave us a printed map to walk there from the hotel. There IS a free shuttle for part of the way (the steep part). We would stay here again.
