Hip-hop dancers, breakers and aerial acrobats join the celebrated Amsterdam Sinfonietta for this stunning new work inspired by T. S. Eliot’s masterpiece of modernist literature.
Eliot’s The Waste Land describes the decay and collapse of society after World War I, when civilisation lay in ruins. Its mood is bleak as the poet searches for meaning in the wreckage, ending with an appeal for regeneration. His vision expressed in unforgettably vivid language still powerfully resonates today. Our modern concerns about war, poverty, disconnectedness and climate change mirror Eliot’s thoughts, inspiring many artists in different fields including Iranian composer Farokhzad Layegh, whose music together with works by Stravinsky, Arvo Pärt, Michael Nyman, Fazil Say and other modern masters drives this breathtaking performance.
Combining brilliant classical musicians with dynamic young hip-hop dancers and acrobats puts a fresh, contemporary spin on these issues, at the same time showing that artistic boundaries are sometimes pointless and, as the free runners involved in the show might say, a wall is not an obstacle, but simply a step up.
