Contrast — Photo x Text | Exhibition Introduction

It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words. The true essence of this saying lies in the fact that a meaningful photograph sometimes cannot be articulated, only felt. When words and images are combined, however, it creates a deeper form of communication and exploration.

"Contrast — Photo x Text" showcases a collection of photographs and texts from two seasoned journalists who entered the field in the 1990s: Tan Chi Wing provided the photographs, while Cheung Di-chong contributed the words. In preparing for this event, the two did not intentionally discuss the content of their respective works, nor did they interfere with each other’s intentions. They observed the images and crafted their texts without inquiry or knowledge of each other's processes, intentionally so. This approach allows the works to present a multitude of interpretations, enabling more meanings to unfold across different dimensions.

The photographs are printed and displayed by the local digital printing studio artellex, revealing connections and contrasts between frame and freedom, change and stasis, destruction and life, reality and imagination, as well as past and future. One photograph depicts a dove turned to bone, symbolizing the disappearance of peace; another shows the seeds of the cotton tree soaring into the blue sky, representing freedom. The texts, placed outside the photographs, create a mirror for the images—either distorting, resonating, or contrasting—reflecting and refracting a delicate interaction that is both present and elusive.

Ultimately, neither the photographs nor the texts are the main focus; it is the viewer's experience that takes center stage.

We believe that everyone can find a sense of belonging within the familiar or unfamiliar landscapes of Hong Kong, seeing something that is uniquely their own.
